What's new

Just tried The Macallan 12...

... And I have to say, I'm impressed! It's not something I would rebuy often, but it's definitely a welcome change of pace to my occasional bottle of Laphroaig 10. It's kind of expensive around here, at $50 and up a bottle, but like I said, it's very nice. Extremely smooth, slight wood, and sometimes a little too much sherry for my tastes. The nose is fantastic, and I even detect a little caramel in there.

If I hadn't seen so many recommendations for this drink in the Speakeasy, I would not have tried it otherwise. This is a lovely scotch for after dinner.

In my experience, with scotch you get what you pay for.

For instance, I tried to save money and bought a $20 single malt. I've now purchased some sour mix so I can finish off this nasty whisky. :001_huh:

I bought my brother a bottle last Christmas. Of course, the selfish caveat of giving liquor as a gift is that you get to drink some too!

I thought it was a good drinkable Scotch, and a nice respite from my favorite Laphroiag too.

Its not a bad Scotch at all...as a peat guy, I tend to gravitate to the smokier varieties...but something like the Macallan 12 is always nice to have on the shelf!

Macallan 12 is my favorite go-to single malt. Super smooth, with a nice amount of sweetness. Mmmmmm, I want some now.

Be it cigars, or scotch whisky, or imperial stout I like them big and bold, something that puts up a good fight. The exception being the Macallan 12. I keep it around for the occasional oak/sherry treat. Sometimes I go for the cask strength 10.

+1

I agree with pretty much everyone here on this scotch. I'm normally a peat guy myself, and when I want something different I go to Jameson's or Bushmill's, but this scotch is nice to have on the shelf.

I agree with the OP, the Macallan is a little too sweet/sherry and one-dimensional for my tastes.

Try Highland Park 12 next time. A more mature, complex, and balanced flavor for about the same price. It's also not like hitting a wall of peat like the Laphroiag.

Mac is a good Scotch. I enjoy all different types of Scotch depending on mood. I know this may get some folks in an uproar but I also enjoy several blends on occasion. It is all personal taste.

Okole Maluna!!

It's my basic go-to scotch for restaurants as most carry it and it is very enjoyable. I might be drinking Makers right now but I lift my glass to your happiness!

That's been my experience as well.

The other reason I love Macallan (apart from the fact that it's just great scotch, even if I prefer Talisker or Islays) is that I've discovered the surefire way to get the most enjoyment out of your favorite whisky: Drink something else.

Trust me on this. You could love Laphroaig with an undying passion, but if it's all you drink, you're going to start getting too used to it. Switch to something else for a few drams (especially something as different as Macallan) and when you go back to the Islay you're going to discover all over again the little subtleties you'd been taking for granted.

I always know I'm starting to miss out on something if I don't have two or three completely different sorts of whisky on hand.

The 12 was my day to day favorite back when I drank scotch. I also tried the 18-very nice as well and once indulged in a glass of 25(!) for my birthday. That was a $35 GLASS of phenomenal scotch...price was 15 years ago too...
