What's new

Just lapped my Coti.

Wow...This Coti was gifted to me by a fellow coach of my football team (Wife is a barber)
It was obviously used but looked "flat" to me, 800 grit and a pencil grid showed me how wrong I was. After a few minutes I realised I needed to bring out the big guns.
This Coti was used to sharpen knives by the looks with the middle being used MUCH more than the sides, almost like a knife was drawn across the middle with a left to right action only.
120 Grit, 320 grit, 600 grit, 800 grit and finished on 1200 grit.

Now to finish cleaning up this Genco, get some scales and try to hone.
I've also got some film on the way, but I'd like to use that to touch up my existing blades, and start from scratch on the stone.

The nice thing about the coticules is the don't have to be perfectly flat as long as the blade makes good contact. That doesn't mean I wouldn't lap one when i first get it but it will wear in to your honing style so don't worry about keeping it flat. Have you posted any pics of it yet?

You really don't need to smooth/polish coti's, for future reference. They wear fast enough that the scratch pattern from a coarse plate flattening will wear off very quickly on its own, especially if you slurry it. I've always done coti's on a 220grit plate and the scratches are gone almost immediately once I use the stone.

Yah, I've got that now, I just wanted to make sure I was starting on a surface that I couldn't blame haha
I thought it might just need a touch up, hence me going right back to the 120 grit when I was it was going to be a long road.

that and IMHO *(oh boy) lapping them constantly is a waste of good stone....

take your time and learn that coti... it may be the only stone you ever need *(notice i didn't say buy... cause if you hang out with us we are a bunch of enablers that will empty your bank account....)

Worst case, it's a nice flat surface to sit my lapping film on when I get it :)
It would be a shame to be given something so useful, yet not be able or not actually use it.

It's amazing how deceiving the eye can be hey. Even buying new from TSS they still need a good lap

I paid Jarrod $5 to lap the one I bought (a service he offers). An excellent use of a fiver. Lapping stones is a PITA, if you don't have a big course DMT. I'll gladly pay a fiver to have it done for me.

Mine appears to be a soft one, so with a bit of wet and dry it was 10 minutes of getting to know a creamy slice of stone

Left and Right sides, iPhone goodness with bad lighting...Just under 2" x Just under 8"

Best I send the straights too, you know, I've heard they have sharp bits on them

Doc, I know it will ruin them, that's why I'm using it as a flat and stable surface for some colourful bits of lapping film...Safety first and all of that !
