What's new

Just bought 5 vintage Gillette DE razors today.good deal?

Until today, my only DE razor was a new Merkur 25C. I bought 5 Gillette razors today for $15 each on Craigslist. They are all in pretty nice shape and in good working condition. I don't think this was a great deal, but I thought the price was fair. The razors are:

• Gillette Red Tip Super Speed TTO - 1957 (C4)
• Gillette Ball End - 1957 (C1)
• Gillette Fatboy TTO - 1960 (F2)
• Gillette Long Handle - Black TTO (C4)
• Gillette Slim TTO - 1965 (K3)

Out of this list, which one or ones would you recommend I keep?

I've tried all 3 of the adjustables and the black beauty is my favourite, slim was a close second and the fatboy third.

The lady from Craigslist just agreed to sell me 65 "Super + Platinum" DE blades made in Israel for $10. From my searches, it appears these are Crystals. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) From what I've read, these are pretty decent blades, so I think I'll pick them up!

Craigslist is where I got my fat boy it was 50 bucks but it is in excellent shape
I would rather pay a few more bones face to face so I know exactly what I am getting. eBay pictures and descriptions are hit and miss too often. 5-10 bucks extra for a razor is insurance if I can see the flaws with my own eyes. Or you could buy from eBay from a spaz and get the greatest /crappiest deal ever YMMV

Every one of those is a keeper. You did very well. Spend some time soaking them all in some dish soap and hot water to loosen any grime on the inside and soap scum on the outside. Then some Scrubbing Bubbles if they need a harder kick (not the kind with bleach please) and then take a soft toothbrush to them with some more dish soap. Lots of guys here would fall all over each other to buy a Fat Boy, Slim, Super Adjustable and a Red Tip for $15 each. It would cause a riot in real life.

Congrats! Those look oddly familiar:p You got a GREAT deal on them and I'd suggest you keep all of them! As your shave journey unfolds you'll want to try them all and I suspect keep them. Enjoy!

Great tips, guys...thanks! I happened to have Scrubbing Bubbles and I just finished cleaning them. While all razors were pretty clean, now they're all now sparkling clean!! I'm going to soak them overnight in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (per a B&B recommendation) to disinfect them.

You know......that soaking overnight thing and I hate to sound line a sour lemon but I wouldn't do it. yes, ok it got the seal of approval but allow the razors with paint to dry for couple hours before you wipe them. From personal experience iwtih some valuble toggles after having soaked them I immediately wipe it down. Can you guess what was also wiped away? Yup the numbers & red dot. I think some quick scrubbing bubbles and good soap in hot water polish THEN a swish or two in alcohol is enough. I no longer soak anything. Just my 2 cents.

Gee...some B&B members recommend a 8-12 hour soak in 3% hydrogen peroxide while others say 5-10 minutes only! So I pulled them out after 10 minutes and gave them a hot water/dish soap bath, then a rinse and blow dry! WOW...what TLC these suckers are getting!!

You have too! It's pride in your tools and getting them sanitized.

Now its time for Mother Metal Polish .

Yes^^ Then go back and rinse and brush very well in 90% alc. This way one doesn't smell the polish later as you shave.
