Just bought 2 SE razors

I just bought 2 SE razors from an antique store. I believe one to be a GEM Featherweight and the other to be a Schick G1 type Injector (Please correct me if I'm wrong). I've never tried an SE before so I'm really excited and can't wait to pick up some blades and shave.

I've cleaned them both up now and I found some GEM/Personna blades at Walgreens. I just shaved with the GEM and it is certainly a different shave than a DE. It will take a few more shaves before I know for sure but I think this is a keeper.

Those Walgreen Gems corrode pretty quickly if you leave them wet in the razor. I dry them off and put a little mineral or shaving oil on them.

Welcome to LOSERville! Population rising.
Never used a featherweight - yet - but more than a few here say they're great.
There's a blade thread round here somewhere to help guide you through the limited options.

Ok. I dried it off gently and set it on some TP when I was done. If I put oil on it should I clean the oil off before I shave with it again?

IMO, if you choose the "Shave Secret" preshave oil from Walmart, leave that on. It can't hurt, and some of our members have liked the results they get from it (I couldn't tell much difference, myself, and have never tried using it without a lather as well).

No, I don't clean off the oil. Just don't use WD40 or something you wouldn't put on your face. I try to preserve them because, at least for me they cost like thirty cents a blade and I get my DE blades for less than ten.

The GEM/Personna blades sold at Walgreens are stainless steel and don't require drying like the carbon steel blades.

Good to know. I was wondering if that was the case but was keeping it dry just to make sure. If I try the carbon steel from CVS then I will make sure to dry it and oil it.

I take out and dry the blade after every shave because I never use the same razor two days in a row. Some guys leave the stainless blades in until they change blades and don't have any issues, but the carbon blades will definitely rust under those conditions.

Regarding the GEM Featherweight, you might want to watch Mr. Guy's video on how to shave at the correct angle with single-edge razors http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUG2B_-D0d4 Although this video specifically is discussing the open-comb Micromatic, he generally shows the correct angle for single edge shaving. Regarding the Schick, in my opinion, the angle isn't so picky, you'll easily pick up how to use it, very smooth, easy to use shavers. Both give great shaves.
