Just a little warning against milling MWF

So about a 8 months ago, I decided [for no particular reason] to mill my puck of MWF into a container. After several months of use, I noticed the scent turning from the beautiful and pleasant sweet, spicy, buttermilky to a "damp towel" smell which really was anything but pleasant.

I still had about 10% of the soap left which I threw out because the damp towel smell had been getting worse.

My guess is:the soap becomes a lot more porous after milling which leads to the water getting in deeper and staying in there instead of "sitting on top" of the puck when it is in its rock-like triple-milled form.

I should note that this wasn't my first puck. I have used up a couple of them and they were fine till the end. It was this milled one that got the damp towel smell.

I got out a brand new puck from my stash and boy oh boy, that beautiful MWF scent was back! I just love this scent and the performance is the best of any soap IMO.

Thought I would just share my experience with milling MWF.

It can happen any time you don't let the puck breathe enough. I can see how milling might exacerbate the problem, though. Thanks for the heads up, though I don't see myself milling my Fat anytime soon.

I'll just accept MWF for what it is. Some days good, some days poor, and in a funny way, the cracks look quite attractive!!

Newbie question about your first point: Does this mean that a soap in a dish or cup should be left uncovered? I have a sample slice of Klars Kabinett that I pull out to lather with, then seal in a small airtight bag. Should I leave it in its own open bowl? What's the best practice on this? Thanks.

You can leave it out. It would take a very long time for it to lose it's scent. I have a sample of this soap and I keep it in a round plastic Zip Loc container that I cover with its lid after it's dry. Remember it's just soap.

I always mill my MWF into sticks.. as I press the milled soap into the stick it becomes warm and soft and presses together easily. Then I put the stick in a sink of warm water for 5 minutes or so and then into the freezer until I remember it's in there.

before milling into a dish try warming the dish by putting it in the microwave filled with water. Then put the milled soap in and press the air out of it. I would leave the dish open after using it.. warm, dark and wet is prefect for growing stuff you don't want to grow or smell.

YMMV

We need a Thank You button like StraightRazorPlace.com.

Thank you! I wouldn't have thought about that.

IMHO "Thank You" button kills the emotion and betrays the gentlemen attitude. Like V said, words always retain their power. Nav, thank you for your advice.

I have my MWF milled into the ceramic dish for over a year now. I have never experienced the problem you have had. But thank you anyway.
