I got this razor off ebay, the scales look to be ivory. One scale had a big chip out of it. I repined it and shaved the scales down. My question is the seller said the razor is from the 1860's, is this about the right date?

Any razor after 1890 ( I think) all razors had to have country of manafacture so as this does not have england on the tang it is before this. But not able to narrow it down further than this.

I don't know about the date but nice clean-up! Did you use it?

I havent honed it yet. it just came in the mail today

It was cleaned in no time then! :thumbup1:

It usually take me a few days but I do everything by hand... Anyways, that should be a great shaver!

According to Goins, the phrase 'Cutlers to their Majesties' was only used prior to 1877, so 1860's is certainly possible. Prince Albert died in 1861 and the Albert Memorial was completed 1876 so it may be this that prompted the removal of that phrase.

beautiful razor and glad to see it cleaned up that well, I was about ready to bid on that one but as yet i have just been watching and trying to get a sense of what all the razors trade for. my ebay skills are non existent so i am slowly oozing in to that mire.
