Joining the straight crowd

I got into wet shaving with a DE last spring and have been doing quite well with it. I've been looking at straights for a while and reading here and at SRP about how-to and decided to take the plunge.

I just picked up 2 straights on ebay last week and received one off the SRP classifieds yesterday so I figured I ought to let everyone know I am here.

The razor I bought off the classifieds was advertised as shave-ready, so I took a shot with it last night (I don't have a strop yet). It tugged quite a bit, like a DE when my face is too dry, but I did manage a somewhat passable shave without cutting myself .

This morning I ordered a strop (+ practice stop) from Tony Miller, so hopefully soon I should be able to start working on fine tuning the shaving skills.

Welcome Friend.

Welcome.
Get your razors honed, specially those who came from eBay. When a razor is bought on SRP classifieds and stated as "shave-ready", I believe in that, but I don't believe in that if that ad is on eBay.

AGREED and Welcome!

Welcome.

What strop did you order?
I have a TM linen and latigo and love it. Use the practice strop at first.

It's the 3-inch latigo and cotton. He didn't have any 2 1/2" latigo in stock and the linen is too pricey for me right now. Actually, the whole setup was too pricey, I just couldn't justify the extra $18.

Yes,the ebay razors weren't sold as shave-ready and I planned on sending them out once I got the money together. I've kind of over-extended myself right now.

When you are first starting out, you are going to nick your strop.

Better to nick the 9 dollar practice one as opposed to the $40 heirloom.

Kreigle, Welcome to the str8 world. You will enjoy your journey. Lots to learn and a lot of enjoyment in the progression. Look for offers for free honing on SRP and here. They pop up frequently especially for new users on a budget.

Happy Shaving!

Mark
