Iwasaki production/honing video

It doesn’t look this one has been posted yet, but recently saw this mostly English video of a few guys who visited the Iwasaki shop and helped forge their own razors. Also some discussion on sharpening/honing.

I was half asleep and don't understand much Japanese...why did the one guy only have half his beard shaved?

Seems like the 5/1 or even 8/1 honing ratio might not be that important to adhere to.
I never understood the logic behind it anyway. Is the bevel face area really 5 times bigger on one side?
You also have some soft cladding that is removed at a faster rate.

That’s the theory of course and similar to chisel/plane sharpening. Sometimes theory/tradition are not always aligned with reality. At the end of the day, it is a fine edge on a piece of steel and there are various ways to get there successfully.

Beats me, but you can set the closed captions to (bad) English in ‘settings’.

I did try that and I may have missed it...YouTube's understanding of Japanese is only marginally better than mine

Here ya go Matt,

Click on Settings, the gear wheel, then select ‘Subtitles’. That brings up a menu with ‘Auto Translate’, click that and pick ‘English’ off the drop down menu.

Not only Japanese. I have used it for Italian and Russian and the stuff that comes out sometimes is so funny.

Iwasaki's are favorite razor. There's western style kami for sale but the seller is asking for almost $2000.00
