What's new

Is this even a razor?

I think it's a razor...there are no markings on it of any sort - not a single number or letter anywhere.

The pictures aren't great - sorry - I don't have a real camera. In the third picture you can see the blade-holding parts. There is a simple pin for a hinge so that the parts swing up and just wedge into place. It has a round, hollow, dimpled handle and holds single edged blades. I don't know what sort of metal it is, other than it is likely some sort of steel and has a good weight to it.

I've never been a canned shaving cream and disposable razor sort of guy, but I am new to the shaving enthusiast crowd. I got this in a lot of razors purchased on ebay and the seller had no idea what it was.
Any ideas about what this is and from where it might have come?

Do you specialize in photographing Ghosts, UFOs and Bigfoot?? Just kidding.

I am thinking it is used for cutting the tops of bread before baking.

Actually it is a device for holding old single edge safety razor blades for stropping. Razors like the Star lather catcher used to use them.

Hmmmm. I could use one of those. I was contemplating sticking mine in between some unseparated disposable chopsticks.

You can have this one! I don't intend to be stropping any single edged blades myself.

...and thanks for the welcome.

I searched for photos of the lather catcher and I found items similar to this. Thanks for the info Legion, it would have taken me a while to figure this out. Feel free to laugh your buns off at me - I shaved with it. It wasn't too bad either. Dang, I've got a lot to learn about razors.
I am currently awaiting the arrival of my newly purchased Rolls . . . If I continue my trend of ignorance, I could use it to cut the grass or produce very thin slices of cheese.

...and actually I have photographed Big Foot. However, he had no hair what so ever . . . apparently he was a shaving enthusiast.

welcome to B&B
If it holds the blade steady and is good to grip, then why not shave with it.
It's got to be better than this....

Patent it QUICK!

You've discovered (invented) an inexpensive device that shaves and holds the blade for stropping too.

Oh, actually, you're possibly around 100 years too late :)

Definitely a stropping/honing handle. Those are actually pretty rare it seems. I have been trying to find one to hone my Henckels Rapide. I have the stropping mechanism but I have no way to hone them.

Honestly I see no reason you can't use it as a shavette.
