Is polypropylene a good secondary strop material?

I believe WD is using it on the richmans

Heard a few ok things

What say yall?

It may be my best option as a secondary component

Might work OK. I've not tried it myself, but I've heard of a lot of people using seat belt material. Myself, I mainly use the cloth component for its cleaning properties, and my intuition says that natural fibres (cotton, linen) would work better for that.

I'm not a fan of it. The one I have is a very coarse weave and stropping on it wasn't pleasant. I can see how the very fine weave of seatbelt material would work.

YMMV as many strop makers do seem to use it so it obviously must work, or at least not harm the edge.

Speaking of horse butts…
I think many are using polyester webbing or a poly/nylon blend. I think most seat belts are a poly/nylon blend.

I have experimented with pure nylon but think it feels a bit too slick.

As for the feel of different cloth materials, part depends on the mateiral itself....nylon, cotton, linen, etc.... and part on how it is woven. Which weave pattern, how coarse the fibers, how coarse the weave, how many plys and the temper...firm of soft, will all play a part. I have used five different cottons and all have a different feel.

Thank you, I am leaning towards natural fibers due to research and results of this thread.

I got the itch to buy some of the poly, but I am going to stay away, I may look into the seatbelt stuff...

Tony, first, I hope your recovery from your fall is going well...

Second, thank you for replying to my thread, it seems like it is almost impossible to find webbing in natural fibers at 2.5 and 3" wide.

I would never impose on you for your sources, but I am not having much luck, however I did find a few that might work with me.

I want to make myself a few strops for different variations and experimenting, it seems like its better to make a few then just one...

Anyways, hope you make it back to making some strops soon!

It is not impossible to find, just bloody tricky.

This is a strop I made (3") from a length I was able to get hold of as a sample. It is thick tubular linen, and works great. Sadly, I got hold of it about the same time as I was getting out of the full sized strop making game, and I never stockpiled any more. I would have had to buy a largish quantity, and I was not prepared to do it at that time.

But it is made, and it is out there. And that is about all I can offer unless I can find a guys number....

Damn you brain, why can't you work with me for once.
