Is Hydrogen Peroxide safe?

I am thinking of purchasing Proraso soap which has received favorable comments from users. As with many other soaps it uses hydrogen peroxide in ingredients. As a mild acid is this safe to use on skin?. Some research suggests continued use may not be safe.

In re-reading the OP, I'm wondering, did you mean either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide? Both of these are in Proraso, and are common ingredients in soaps. These are not the same as hydrogen peroxide, which as you say is an acid. Sodium and potassium hydroxides are bases, essentially lye, which are used to react with fatty acids to make soap. If this isn't what you're referring to, then I'm at a loss, because as I said before, there is no hydrogen peroxide listed in Proraso's ingredients.

I wanted to thank you all for your generous comments and advise. It is wonderful to have a forum like this particularly for a newcomer to DE like me. As HoratioCaine points out the correct ingredient is Potassium Hydroxide and not Hydrogen Peroxide as in my original post. Apologies for the error and thank you HoratioCaine for the correction. If anyone is interested in good quality, reasonably priced, natural soaps look at the ones from QEDusa.com.

Thank you.

No problem on skin, i would think it's in the soap to act as a antiseptic for the occasional weeper, also probably a common cause of waterspots and rust as it is an oxidizer. What have you read to cause concerns?

There are many threads on similar subjects of potentially dangerous ingredients in shaving products. The conclusion reached at the end of each of these threads is that whatever potentially dangerous ingredient is listed in a shaving soap or cream, it is always in small enough proportions as to be of minimal risk to the greatest majority of consumers, and is often simply a product of the soap making/cream making process. Also, Tabac is so good it doesn't matter what's in it. :thumbup1:

That said, don't worry about the soap, use it and love it, and welcome to B&B!

That sounds like my dad giving an order. "You will eat that broccolli and you will like it!"

I use hydrogen peroxide on my teeth when I brush, and when I get canker sores. My mother used it to clean small wounds when I was a child too. I doubt you have anything to worry about considering they use it in first-aide and toothpaste.

Whose "research" are you referencing?. Good gawd, H2O2 as been in first aid kits since the pigs ate my sister. Stop worrying and start living unless that is you're tring to be the next Woody Allen.

+2

(and sorry about your sister)

I'm not so sure about some of you that know folks that drink it...it's used to induce vomiting afterall.:bored:

I said I drink vast quantities of Dihydrogen Monoxide, not Hydrogen Peroxide!! They are not anywhere near being the same thing.:lol:

For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Ot-oh...I drink it in vast quantities, I think I have a serious addiction to Dihydrogen Monoxide!!! Oh No!! :mad3::mad3:

Dihydrogen Monoxide, lather just wouldnt be the same without it. I sometimes wonder if lather (or life itself!) could even exist were it not for dhmo.

Bring on the dhmo!

back to topic, H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) actually has some health benefits, used properly.

Am I missing something? I've looked over the ingredients labels of both my Proraso soap and cream, and I see no hydrogen peroxide listed. Granted, mine date back a few years. Have they changed the formula?
