Is chrome the best?

It seems like the vintage chrome plated razors I have seem to withstand the test of time better than other platings. This seems to be followed by nickel then silver with gold coming in last. Am I right in this assumption?

All things being equal, chrome is 8.5 on the MOH scale where-as nickel and platinum are 4, silver is 3, gold is 2.5 and rhodium is 5-6. All things are seldom equal however. The surface prep of brass is critically important, as is the thickness of the coating, as is the quality of the plating. Lots of variables involved, but yes, all things being equal, chrome will last longer.

Great explanation! Thanks. As you note, with vintage all things are seldom equal.

Chrome should last longer because it creates a barrier between the metal and the elements. Thats why chrome was invented in the first place.
