Is AOS still tallow?

Or has it reformulated?

I feel like an idiot, because I just ordered a puck of the Sandalwood today. The ingredients list on the vendor's site listed sodium tallowate first. Thus reassured, I went ahead and got it.

Then I went to the AOS site, and on the description (no ingredients list), they say "formulated with glycerin and coconut oil." No mention of tallow. Back to the vendor's site I go, to read the ingredients fully. And glycerin is in there, somewhere in the middle.

So I'm confused. Is AOS still tallow or have they reformulated along with seemingly everyone else?

The AoS site has been wrong for ages. The puck you ordered should be tallow.

It's tallow based

Indeed. Congratulations on a fine choice.

I just bought a puck a few days ago. Tallow is the first ingredient, so it's still the original formulation. I think the website is just using marketing techniques to resonate with potential customers.

Not going to sell a product with the line: "Made with the finest beef fat."

Hopefully they won't reformulate it in the future, now that the company is owned by Proctor and Gamble...or so I'm told.

Cheers!

The day that happens :)eek:), I will camp out at the local branch to clean them out of refill pucks.

Because it's P&G. I would think the chances of reformultion are even higher.

Sorry but these big mutinationals tend to go with the flow. Ethics policies, green credentials global customer base etc.,etc.,

Cow fat doesn't really cut it nowdays.

It usually doesn't matter what the customer thinks. Woops, did I just say that.

Stock up now would be my advice or switch to GFT who have reformulated a really good soap that "now" works really well.

Guys, this has nothing to do with plans of reformulation (if those plans even exist). This has to do with the properties of fats. Coconut oil lathers well and glycerin is moisturizing. Tallow makes the soap hard, but produces a weak lather, so why list it?

Actually, Matthew is correct. Tallow is a base oil that lends hardness to the bars and some lather stability. Coconut and palm kernel oils are the lather oils.

I think the issue is less one of "oh no, the tallow is gone" and more of "nuts, they took a soap that performs great, and mucked around with the ratios to give me a soap that is meh." Trumper showed that you can reformulate with great results, and not every reformulation turns out like Floris. Cade and Gold Dachs are great tallow-free soaps. It is clearly a question of how and not if when it comes to reformulation. Still, I love my tallow soaps and will get nervous whenever someone tosses out the "R" word.

This hasn't been my experience.

The reason tallow soaps produce such a good lather is only partially because of the tallow. The tallow makes the lather creamy, but retards it from being formed.

EDIT: For the record, I enjoy my tallow, so this not a knock against it.

Well when it comes to soaps, my experience has been that only tallow-based ones (like Tabac and Cella) give me shaves comparable to, say, TOBS. Glycerine & veggie soaps do explode with lather, but that lather is less effective in terms of "oiliness" IMO.

..... The tallow makes the lather creamy....QUOTE]

This is the point. The lather is creamier. I don't think you can overstate how nice the creamy lather seems to be, whether it's actually more effective or not. The creamy feeling is wonderful. The face feel after washing the lather off is amazing.

My two backups, one of which was purchased at an AoS store fairly recently, both list tallow as the first ingredient.

AoS is a great SS, enjoy it!
