Interesting story how I got a British Rocket for $2

The other day I was looking at the online classifieds in my area and somebody was selling a Gillette safety razor for $2. The pictures were small and a bit blurry, but the razor looked like a regular flare tip super speed. When I phoned the guy he said he worked in a recycling plant and found the razors in the garbage. He said he found 4-5 razors, but gave some away and kept one to sell. So he put the razor up for sale for $2.

That same day, I met him for coffee and he handed over the razor which turned out to be a British flare tipped Rocket, low profile head, plated with Rhodium. The razor was in excellent shape and was very clean (not caked with green soap scum and whiskers). He said he would try and get the razors back, he said he gave the others to his sister? Anyway, if he gets them back he will sell them each for $2. I said if he found more at his work to give me a call. I told him that I was glad he pulled them from the garbage before they got melted down.

It's funny how you acquire razors sometimes. Just imagine all to hundreds of razors that get thrown out everyday in the world. Basically it's a grandparent who passes away, the relatives find the razors in the bathroom or dresser and think, ("nobody shaves with these anymore, and you can't buy blades for these either"). So in the garbage they go.

A Rocket for $2? Nice. A rhodium Rocket for $2? Very, very nice! Thank god he had the foresight to save them before they became slag. Maybe I should take out some scrappers to coffee.

Congratulations! I got lucky too, my younger brother gave me one of these along with a NOS black handled superspeed. They are fantastic razors. No other razor in my current collection is as buttery smooth when it come to opening or closing the 'silo' doors as the rocket flaretip.

Good story. Its amazing how up until 1971 when Gillette came out with the Trac2 everyone used safety razors, now it just seems to be us.
