What's new

Interesting soap ordeal.....

Visited the in-laws this weekend with my wife and I decided to take my shaving accoutrements with me so I could at least have an excuse to escape to the bathroom and have some peace and quiet....only problem was...I forgot my soap puck! :blushing:

What to do? :sneaky2:

I search my mother-in-laws bathroom pantry and discovered a bar of Dove. I'm thinking what the heck....lets shave with this. I took my Chubby 2 and swirled away at the bar and proceeded to lather the soap on my face. Pretty nice lather! :thumbup1: The shave was very smooth and the soap provided a very nice slick cushion. I was using my newly acquired 34c with an Astra and received an effortless BBS shave with zero irritation....or redness. My skin was super soft and had a nice subdued sheen to it.

Has anyone else here experimented with regular soap or Dove anyway? I feel like I cheated doing this!

Yes I have... Believe it or not Ivory and Dial both provided a slick comfortable shave with a DE or injector. I was out of town and forgot a cream in my Kit. Hotel Dial, or Ivory with a Rooney 3/1 worked great. CCS bordering on DFS... Surely would not want to try with a straight... but in a pinch.....

From the website:

The Dove soap ingredients for the "white bar" are: sodium cocoyl isethionate, stearic acid, coconut acid, sodium tallowate, water, sodium isethionate, sodium stearate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoate or palm kernelate, fragrance, sodium chloride, tetrasodium EDTA, trisodium etidronate, BHT, titanium dioxide and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate.

Failing to see exactly what the "moisturizing cream" is.

I've sampled a number of bath/shower soaps, (I mean, you just *have* to try them, you know... ) and got a fair lather with some of them. But none of the lathers was 'lasting' in any way. Either the lather quickly evaporated, or the lather quickly dried out. I'm resigned to limiting myself to 'shaving' soaps. <sigh>

IIRC, it seems that about the only bath/facial soap that lathered well was a clear glycerine soap. But if the wife ever brings home a bar of Dove, I'll have to try it.

I did the same and can honestly say the same as you regarding Dove. Good shave and good feel. I've bought shaving soaps that were not as good.

Way back in the early 60's or late 50's I remember getting my Dad an electric shave soap dispenser for Christmas one year. The instructions that came with it reccommended you place a bar of "Dove" soap into it and after pressing a button mounds of lather would be dispensed. I believe the lather was also warmed but not sure on that one.

it does say water in there :biggrin1:

I have tried using my Dove soap for shaving when it was my shower soap. I did a couple of quick passes in the shower and the results were OK, but it didn't feel like it was offering the same protection as shaving soaps.

I think you can always get one good shave out of any product, because you're putting a lot effort and care into getting it right. The test is if you can shave with it every day without pain, and I doubt I at least could do that for very long with Ivory.

Way back in the 70's, I ran out of my go-to cream (C&E Sweet Almond Oil...ah, how I pine for it still!), and had to shave for a few days with my bath soap: Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Oil liquid soap. The good news: it sure woke me up. The bad news: pretty good slickness, but absoultely no cushion at all.

If any of you out there are contemplating trying this, I sure wouldn't recommend it exept in a dire emergency.
