Initial observations on ATT Above The Tie Atlas M1

My anniversary razor (thread and poll earlier in this forum), Above the Tie (ATT) Atlas 5 piece set, arrived on Monday, and I've had three shaves with it (using the M1 baseplate) thus far.

Two initial observations:
1. It's cool. It's heavy, solid feeling, and well balanced. The short Atlas handle is very easy to manipulate. It's less gnarly than my Razorock SLAB handle, but it still doesn't slip even when using shaving oil. It looks and feels industrial strength ... or maybe like a surgical tool. And with even minimal care it looks like it should outlast me easy.

2. It's got an interesting head design. Even the M1 is aggressive ... but not. The blade sticks out from under the cap more than my EJ89. The blade gap is tiny ... you have to look very close to see light between the blade and baseplate. But the blade exposure feels to be more than the EJ. I can feel the edge of the blade easy, but the angle seems pretty well restricted to an optimal cutting angle, and it seems pretty safe (no nicks yet).

My first shave produced some irritation, but my prep was a little less than I usually do, and I was excited and went for BBS. Yesterday was less irritation. This morning had very little irritation ... less than I'm used to with my EJ or Merkur slant or Silvertone. A good DFS with very little irritation. (Note: I also switched this morning from an Israeli Blue to an Israeli Red ... so this may have also made a difference).

I'm wondering if I may be one of those who benefits from an efficient razor with fewer passes. Three shaves is too early for me to make any recommendations from, but so far I'm really liking the ATT Atlas M1.

Cheers!

Nice review and I'm really glad you are liking the ATT so far. Stan is a great guy and those razors are beautiful...beautiful. They sure are an investment. The thing that holds me back is there is no open comb. Outside of the Muhle R89 I've never been able to get a really good shave from a safety bar razor...and the R89 has little scallops so it's sort of a hybrid safety bar. None of the vintage Gillette TTO's have cut it for me.

I really really love the way Stan's razors look and I know the quality is outstanding. I am going to keep reading about them every time a thread pops up and I may take the plunge one day. Enjoy your new razor....congrats on acquiring it. Here's to many more great shaves!

Open combs are supposed to be coming ... I might pick up one of their open comb baseplates myself. The value of the 5 piece razor system seems pretty good to me with the 3 baseplates ... it sort of makes it like $100 per razor.
