Incense

I find myself wanting a nice incense driven cologne. Since I'd like it to be focal point instead of a supporting component, I've been thinking of Comme des Garcons' Avignon or Kyoto. I've tried L'Artisan's Passage d'Enfer and found it lacking. Likewise, Heeley's Cardinal was somewhat boring.

Before I go in search, can anyone offer their opinions on those Avignon and Kyoto. Or offer alternatives?

When you say "incense," is there a particular kind of incense you're looking for? More of a frankincense/myrrh thing? Or just more of a resin-y quality in general?

Wish I could give you advice on those 2 frags, but I'm not familiar with either of them. However, I've been browsing one perfumer's site a lot lately. Here's a frag you might want to check out.

Good question Markb...I like the frankincense/myrrh thing but it often strikes me as insubstantial. Perhaps it is resin-y that I want more?

I do like how Tauer handles incense!

Henry, I have tried all the CdG incenses and a fair amount of the Red series (Palisander, etc.) My take on incense was that it is an ingredient more suited towards feminine fragrances. As used by CdG they are all thin, ephemeral, and very sheer. I wear plenty of borderline-fem scents but these were all too sheer by half. Much as you dewcribe the collective effect of F&M.

Resin on the other hand can be much more masculine. I just popped for a bottle of Serge Lutens Fille en Anguilles (pine and resin, and Serge-like candied fruit accords)and the resin note there helps keep the heavy pine in check. That may be more what you are looking for.

The Amouage line has some that are great with incense, but they are $$$$

Le Labo Vetiver 46 is sort of my go to incense. It doesn't have much vetiver that I can tell.

D'oh...you've already got Vetiver 46. What is your take on it? Incense?

Have you tried L'Air du Desert Moracain?

Interesting thread.
I've recently tried Melograno by Santa Maria Novella which is exactly the same scent as the Pre-Post cream. It's basically pomegranate with incense. A little flowery for me, but as I have the cream, I didn't think it was worth splashing out for the cologne as well. It might be worth considering if it's the right incense scent?

Vetiver 46 is an interesting one...I get a faint whiff of incense smoke and of course no Vetiver!

I've sampled L'Air du Desert Moracain just once. It had a musty aspect that put me off. Perhaps I should try it again.

+1. To me, too. But I believe the Good Professor is already in possession of that one.

:blushing:

I smell many things in that one, but precious little incense.

I'll definitely have to try that one. I love the way the pre/post smells.

Great suggestion! Thank you.

i'm sampling the C&S Frankincense & Myrrh today, and I think it's really nice.

I was given that as a gift...unfortunately, I think I am after something a little heavier, a little gloomier.

I got a decant of CDG's Hinoki--Lord knows a full bottle requires a co-signer--and although the woods were dominant, it's got a nice incense vibe that I find more masculine than the incense series.

L'Occitane's Vetyver also has a nice incense vibe, and most of the range from Sonoma Scent Studios has a strong resin base. I have samples of Winter Woods and Ambre Noir.

Could folks say more about the le labo series? I'm foolish for woods + incense. (This sometimes makes me foolish with money.)
