What's new

I'm still up in the air on Ogalla's Bay rum......

So I purchased some samples of Ogalalla's Bay rum. I like the smell but it just doesn't seem to smell like a fresh after shave (if that makes sense) smells to much like cinnamon to me. In the bay rums defense, I have never smelled bay rum before so I didn't know what to expect. Years ago I used to use a barber that when he finished shaving the back of your neck, he applied an aftershave which I loved the smell. I was kinda hoping this bay rum was that but its not even close.
I do know one thing though, this burns like the dickens when applied. Every other after shave I have used stung, but this BURNS!

Ogalla is not my favorite bay rum, to me it's watery & lack luster, I'm using a cheap Bay Rum Aftershave Lotion made by "Master" I picked up at Sally Beauty Supply

I recently tried Ogallala Bay Rum for the first time and I like it, but I don't have many other bay rums to compare it to. The aftershave that your barber used to use may have been pinaud clubman. That's what the barber I went to when I was a kid used.

I don't have anything to really compare it too but I love Ogallala Bay Rum. I wasn't totally sold on the scent at first but as I used it more I have come to quite like it. I think it is great for the warmer months. Though I will agree it can burn like nothing else once the burn subsides my skin feels really great.

I have only smelled Pinaud products at the Beauty Supply Store..and..uh..no thanks. ;)

I received my sample kit from Ogallala today. The only one I like is the Lime and Peppercorn. The others are just too... Clovy! Yeah, Cloves. I may try Masters but I may not be a Bay Rum fan after all.
I am going to try the free bar of soap though.

If memory serves, West Indian bay is related to cloves, which would explain why it smells like cloves.

You'll love Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum.

If you want your face to feel like a victim of a flamethrower. The only way I can use my Pinaud CI Bay Rum is if I mix it 50/50 with Master Bay Rum and then add glycerin and a little purified water. Then add a little more Master Bay Rum for good measure.
Otherwise, it burns hell outta my face.:mad3:

I use Master and like it a lot. I want to try Superior 70.
I like Ogallala ok. Not quite strong enough on the scent. Quite strong enough on the burn.

+1. And I really don't know what the flamethrower bit is all about!:001_rolle I rather like doing stop, drop, and roll as an end to my shaving routine! I mean, it's not really that bad!

I suspect that the reason that VIBR burns so intensely is because of cinnamon. The sensation reminds me of the reaction that my mouth has when I pop in a fresh piece of Trident cinnamon, and it only lasts for a moment. :bayrum2:

I find that the Ogallala Limes & Peppercorns doesn't burn at all in comparison. I love them both, though.

I'd be willing to bet the after shave your barber applied to the back of your neck was Pinaud Clubman, available at almost every corner drugstore, as well as Sally's Beuty Supply. It's guaranteed to take you straight back to the Barber Shop you remember as a kid.

As far as Ogallala, it's my favorite Bay Rum. Yes, it does have a strong cinnamon accord; but most bay rums will have an element of that as well as clove. Some are more "clovey", some more "cinnamony".

That might be my favorite part of Pinaud bay rum. Think of it as tempering yourself for anything that may come your way through the day. :biggrin1:

As for Ogalla, I have mixed feelings too. Love the smell but it just doesn't seem right most of the time.

I really like Og Bay Rum and Sandalwood.

I had one type of Bay Rum from them that smells like puke when you sniff the bottle. Once applied, it smells nothing like that though. I gave it away and do not remember which one it was

I know you have to shake the bottle real well before applying to mix the oils up since they become separated.

I'm not too crazy on Bay Rum in general. I like the smell, but it is only something that I would use every now and then only in the winter months.
