What's new

I'm new, to the site and to DE shaving, :)

Hi all
I'm John, from Ireland, have only had four DE shaves thus far, with a cheap plastic DE razor I bought in a pharmacy, I like it despite the poor equipment, and the smoothness of my shaves madde me decide to explore further and invest in a good razor and blades etc.
I have done a bit of research, and semi-decided on a Merkur 23c, I can get one for 24.95 euro's, which I think is not bad. I've read a few reviews, one or two on here aswell. Think I'm making a good choice?
I never knew there was so much to shaving, I used to use the fusion pro-glide disposable razors, but it was no fun. I enjoy browsing all the possible products I see online, and am glad to have found this site, I hope to find out a lot more.
Any advice would be mucho appreciated, regaring my choice of the 23c, maybe a few pointers on blades? the site where I seen the razor has ten merkur blades for 4.99, (buy 2 get one free) so I may start with those.
I have gotten nicked every time I shaved with the DE but I expect that's due to the quality of my equipment (a cheap 4.99 DE razor, boots own brand) it will be in the bin as soon as I recieve my merkur :)
Thanks :)

Welcome aboard John, i think that its a good razor. I would choose a sampler bade from Ebay, that way you can decide what blade is better fro you. Also a nice Silvertip badger brush would be highly recommended. Then apply it with some freshly bought Proraso cream which is best shave cream IMHO.

Welcome to B&B!

Definitely try a blade sampler. I believe shaving.ie offers at least one.

What about software? What are you using for a brush and cream or soap? The lather makes the shave.

Welcome to the site!
Like you I am very new to the site and DE shaving. Instead of going with a new razor, I am opting for getting a few vintage Gillettes. My first DE is a Lord. It was only $9 and I figured if I didn't like it, I could just chuck it. I have never seen a plastic DE, though.

John
Welcome aboard and I will also recommend a blade sampler as my "go to" blade may be the worst blade in the world on your face.
Let me also suggest you check the BST area here or local antique shops/fairs or even Ebay (but maybe check here on prices as there are some quick buck artists of late asking outrageous prices for dirt common razors) for some vintage Gillette razors.

Ah thats a million for your advice guys, really appreciate it. I was just about to buy the 23c on the site I was looking at, and it's out of stock :(, typical, maybe that's telling me to browse further. I have come across another possible, it's the merkur 42 1904 classic, I would get it shipped to my door for 25.95 euro, which aint bad, I have read a few reviews and it seems to have a decent rep as a starter razor.
I also put in a 7,50 bid on e-bay for an old gillette. Knowing me I will have a collection of razors and things by the end of the month, lol
Thanks again :)

Welcome to B&B John.

There are too many variables to try to recommend one razor over another for your perfect shave. But that is part of the fun, taking your beard, skin, life style, etc and finding what works best for you. In the beginning it's harder to avoid, but try to only change one thing at a time for a more meaningful evaluation of your results.

Different blades and razors can combine to fit your shaving needs, so I also recommend a blade sampler pack. I only use Feathers now, but they work for me in the handful of DEs I use.

Enjoy your journey....
