It'd be funny if golfers did a stunt fall with every swing, like soccer players pretending they'd been fouled.

Then again, maybe not. People might think something like "poor Elmer's artificial hip is bothering him again."

As for me, my wife and the dog know I'm a playa because I'm grunting with every phrase as I type. Unhhh. I mean business. Unhhh.

Actually, I think it's a psychological tactic to intimidate the opponent and encourage the person doing it. Kind of like the testosterone infused guys at the gym who grunt and scream when lifting.

I think the theory is that great exertion in the torso from a strong tennis stroke expels air from the lungs, and it would be a waste of energy (and perhaps even reduce your output strength) to restrain it.

One of the first female grunter/screamers was Monica Seles.

Probably like martial arts Chi. They are trying to focus all their energy and such on the long fast high spin shots. I don't think I've seen them do it when they have that little 5-10ft tap dribble over the net when the opponent gets caught on the wrong side of the court. But it sure is fun to watch!!
