What's new

If you were to gift a razor to an experienced DE shaver, what would you get?

My dad likes all things old school so I'm thinking about getting him a vintage safety razor for Father's Day that he could use. He currently has an EJ DE89 (as do I).

I'm thinking something adjustable might be in order since he doesn't currently have that option. Maybe something similar to what he currently uses, but different enough to give him some variety.

What are your thoughts/recommendations?

When was he born? Is a dated birth year razor viable?
A shiny Fatboy or Slim will always impress. If not an adjustable then a nice Single Ring or one of the fancier types - Sheraton, Senator, aristocrat editions etc

Get him a D4 Fatboy

+1 on a NOS/cased fatboy or even the gold plated Executive (gold fatboy).

For a new razor the Progress might be one he would enjoy as the adjustment levels wrap around the DE89 (more and less then a DE 89)

Definitely, He was born in Nov 1958. I guess that makes him a D-4.

You must be mistaken. Fathers of posters cannot be only 7 years older than ME.

;)

Definitely a Fatboy.
Else something old and snappy.
Or..... have you ever considered a Single Edge?

I was going to ask about his birth year and quarter! You must look no further nor ask for any other ideas! I concur, any D4. Go with a D4 Gillette "Adjustable" if you can find one. Oh, and may I say as a C3 person myself and a father of adult children, I would be absolutely blown away if my kids gifted me a birth year-quarter razor.

Like all above, a birth year razor. Saying that it's hit and miss trying to track em down. I'd go with a cased super adjustabale(there seems to be a lot about at the moment) or a re-palted Gillette NEWs' either sc or lc and get a case for it. If your stuck for one Krona on here may be able to help. His work is very good.

Birthyears are a good choice, if he is into history maybe get one made in the same year as an event that is important to him. Or maybe a razor and box that was exclusive to a group like the 1953 Gillette issued to the Canadian Army that I'm hoping is delivered today.

Did they make the Fatboy in 58? I see a lot of 59s on ebay. I'd love to try and find one if they did. (Nevermind, I just saw one)

Haha lets, just say I was younger than many to wise up on wet shaving ;-)

We both want to eventually get up to single edges. That may be something more of a joint effort in the future. As for now, we're having too much fun going down the DE rabbit hole. I have 3 different bottles of Pinaud aftershave heading my way from him right now.

Good to know, I don't mind paying a bit, it the quality is good, especialy if the case is well kept. I've got a little time too :)

What's your mother's birthyear/quarter? Maybe he'd get a kick out of having a razor that is her age??

Ben

Hmm that's an Idea. Especially if I'm having trouble tracking his down. She would be 1959 July, So I guess an E3.

Thanks for all the info! Looks like I'll be scouring the sites looking for a bit!

There are a ton of good options. His birth quarter, wedding quarter, your birth quarter, or something just old and cool. 1912, lathercatcher, injector, gillette new....any of these could work and shave great. I'd definitely look for a D3 as first choice if it was me, though.

Try 3 years,and a month older ,I'm a G-4 date code. :biggrin1:

+1 on the birth quarter 195 or Executive.

^ I'm already older than the OP's father. What happened? Where did the time go? Sigh. Well, at least I have a nice shave awaiting me on the morrow. I think I'll use my D-1 birthyear-quarter TV razor...

My suggestion: a birth year-quarter Fatboy!
