What's new

I want a Simpsons brush...

I'm thinking about picking up a Simpsons brush in the near future. I own a Rooney 3/1 Super and love it.

I use only soaps now and I'm looking for something a more little specialized in that area. I bowl lather primarily. I really wanted a chubby, but it doesn't seem like that is a good brush for bowl lathering. Is that correct? I don't like how scrubby my tweezerman brush was and I love the feel of my Rooney.

I want something for soaps, bowl lathering, something different than my Rooney, and a not so very scrubby brush.

So what are the top Simpsons brushes I should be looking at?

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

Justin-The Fifty Series has a solid, longer handle and nice, dense knot that handles soaps well and is equally adept at bowl and face lathering. The Duke 2 or 3 is also quite good, and the Classic 2 and Colonel would be good candidates as well. All are available in the Best grade of hair. You may also be interested in the Persian Jar or Tulip, which have good handles for bowl lathering and also handle soaps well.

"and a not so very scrubby brush"

Most short lofted and dense Simpsons (ie Chubby, Duke, Colonel) would feel very scrubby...

My recommendation is to go with a Tulip, Persian Jar (either in Best or regular 3-band super)

I would recommend a Tulip or a Chubby actually. TO say that you cant bowl lather a Chubby is not correct. And to be honest, I dont find any of the Simpson brushes scratchy.

The Duke 3 Best is certainly one of the finest "all around" brushes in the exceptional Simpsons range. It is amazing with both soaps and creams, using both bowl and face lathering technique. Furthermore it is soft and slightly scrubby on the face and its knot is densely packed with Simpsons "Best" grade of hair, which is of excellent quality and represents a great value for the money. Other fantastic choices are the Colonel X2L and the Classic 2, both again in Best.

Confirmed. Chubby 2 can work fine with a bowl, though I think it's more fun to face lather. I don't know why, but the first thing that comes to mind using this brush is FUN.

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen. So far from looking at the brushes online, I'm liking the Duke 3 in best, Chubby 2 in best, Tulip 2 or 3 in 2-band.

What is Simpsons Best badger like? Scrubby, soft, in-between? I really like the handle on the milk churn and the key hole brushes, not sure if they'd work.

Where I'm looking to order they only have the Tulip in 2-band, how's the 2-band characteristics for bowl lather soaps?

As confirmed by both Brett (Simpson/Vulfix General Manager) and Mark (Simpson/Vulfix Managing Director) the current "Best" grade of hair is truly exceptional. It is soft and slightly scrubby. If you like to face lather, that light scrubby feeling on the face is fabulous. Furthermore most brushes in Best have a great knot and produce an incredibly good lather.

for $65, the simpsons colonel 2XL in best is hard to beat. it can do soaps, it can do creams. it can bowl lather, it can face lather.

I just got a Chubby 2 in super, and it is crazy. I exclusively bowl lather with soaps about 50% of the time and it works wonders. I would not call the super "scrubby". It is very dense, however it is also very soft, even after just a few uses. I have no experience with the Chubby 2 in best, but I am sure you would love it too. CRAZY dense soap killers! It works very well with creams too.

I'd buy three that you want to try, use them and then sell the ones you don't like.

I'd live to do that, but explaining that to SWMBO is an impossible sale.

I've narrowed it down to the duke 3 and Chubby 2, both in best. What's the main differences between these two brushes? And will that offer more density an backbone compared to my Rooney 3/1 in super?

I've gotten two Duke 3 brushes and have been pretty disapointed with the overall quality. They had over-trimmed lofts and weren't as dense as I would have liked.

Chubby 2 hands down would be my choice and would offer more density and backbone than the Duke 3 and a LOT more than the Rooney 3/1.

If it were me, I'd look at buying from T&H with the 20% off coupon code. I picked up my Polo 10 from there and think the coupon code is overly generous.

Three? Why did you bother after the first?

+1 The Chubby is the king of the hill

Simpson has had a lot of variation in their product as of late. Not to mention that the best quality hair also verys from brush to brush. Plus have not never sold a brush you wished to try again later?

The Chubby is a bigger brush with a wider handle. The knot is much more dense with a slightly taller loft. I much prefer the Chubby, but to be honest it seems as if the Duke is Simpsons second most popular brush, and its well earned. I just like a denser more scrubby brush.

As for the best grade its very good. Its as soft as some silvertip grade out there. It does very a bit though, some have touch of scritch some do not. I have had 4 or 5 Simpson best and for what its worth my Duke is easily the most soft of them all and might as well be silveritp.

So it sounds like the chubby 2 might offer the most difference to my Rooney 3/1 and be a great performer with soaps. What company is T&H and where can I get that coupon code? Just to confirm, it is possible to bowl lather a CH2?

You all have been very helpful and I'm grateful for everyones input!!!

Edit: Just realized you meant Truefitt & Hill :)

I've been using a Rooney 3/1 Super for the past year. this Christmas I got a Simpson Colonel. Haven't used it yet, so I can't tell you how it compares, but here's a side-by-side photo to give you an idea of size.

The Chubby 2 is worlds apart from the Rooney 3/1. It is more dense, has a higher loft and a more square handle. The shaving experience will be much different. I personally prefer the Chubby hands down. The 3/1 is a nice brush, but its a small brush and you cant get away from that, especially compared to a big brush like a Chubby 2.
