What's new

I used to think that.

Prefatory note: I think that most, if not all of us have changed our minds about something in our shaving arsenal as we gained more experience. Something that we may have hated, or at least disliked, that we revisited later and found to be fine, or even really nice.

Let's see if we can record those experiences here. Razors, blades, soaps, creams.....whatever. If you didn't like it at one point, but changed your mind later, post about it here. :biggrin1:

------------------------

I'll get things started:

I used to think that the Gillette Old Type razors were unusably aggressive.

I got a Single Ring as my second or third razor, and I was pretty much unable to use it. I found it too aggressive, and quickly got rid of it. In my defense, there were several threads at the time that indicated that you had to shim the Single Ring to make it usable - so perhaps other people were having issues with them then too.

Of course, the real reason I wasn't able to use one effectively was because my technique was crap. Shaving angles were wrong, I used too much pressure, my prep probably sucked, and I used Derby blades at the time (I hate those now).

Well, a year or so later I tried them again, and found that I liked the Old Type razors a lot. I have several models at the moment - Single Ring, ball end Old Type, Pocket Editions, ABC Gillettes, Bulldog, Big Fellow, etc. I like them all. They're actually pretty mild, and reward a shave with a sharper blade (Feathers for me). Still, they're really efficient too.

So, my technique improvement resulted in me completely changing my mind about these wonderful razors.

If you have had a similar experience with a shaving implement, let us hear about it. :001_cool:

I used to think shavettes were unusable. Now I have six and use them every day to clean up the edges of my beard and 'stache.

I used to think that I could not ever shave ATG, until I came across my slant. Having the right gear for your face is always important.

I thought Wilkinson blades were ok. Tried them again this summer and thought they were the harshest blade I ever used.

I used to think Feather blades were naturally best simply because they were the sharpest.

Who cares if they tore my face to ribbons?! ;-)

Now I prefer a more gentle blade, like Merkur or even Dorco.

After having tried various carbon steel DE-blades I thought they were not meant for me; not sharp, not comfy, not nice at all.

I tried the wrong ones because the carbon steel Captains by Lord are my #1 blade now. I almost didn't buy them at all (I try to buy a pack of every blade I don't know yet but hesitated because they were carbon steel ones) but because there was nothing to find on the WWW I couldn't resist taking home a pack. Re-ordered another life-time supply after I tried them in various razors, so good!

I used to think I had to try and get BBS, now I realize it comes on it's own.

I used to think my face didn't like splashes, now I realize the burn is good.

I used to think SuperSpeeds were too mild, now I realize I love them.

I used to think Simpsons were the only brush I wanted, now I realize there are much better options out there.

I used to think I couldn't face lather, now I realize I love it and is very easy to make perfect lather with this method.

I used to think that I hated shaving. Now I realize that it can be a painless and even enjoyable experience

I used to think that the #1 advice for classical shaving "never apply pressure" was a method to get noobs to use as little pressure as possible in the beginning then when they'd get a hang of it they could apply more. I learned the hard way that really no pressure is correct.

I learned that I need not get a BBS every shave. BBS depends on how my mood and time. If I'm in the mood to exert enough effort to get a BBS and the time I have.

I used to think creams were on par with soaps.

I used to think ingrowns would always be the side effect of shaving.

I used to think scents were for sissies.

I love the family of Flare tips. I thought they were to mild. Now ghey are part of my permanent rotation.
The Red tip has been another I had dismissed. They are great shaver too.

I used to think vintage DE razors were never as good as modern DE's. After using a modern (Parker?) DE razor for the last 10 years, I'm now using an inherited Gillette Fatboy for the last 2 months. Its now become my main razor.

After buying my Duke 2 I was so disappointed that I took pics of it to sell on BST. Glad I didn't

BECAUSE NOW...

That brush is my all time favorite face lathering machine.

I still have the BST pics just in case I change my mind again... NOT

I used to think the more aggressive the razor the better. Now my go to is a 51 black tip. I also used to think using the hottest possible water was a good idea.
