But to no avail. Is Illinois strop a good brand for the money? I have a small strop from Larry@Wippeddog but would like to get a larger unit.

There are better ones for the money. If you are looking for a cheap starter check out the ebay starshavingsupplies strops. They are full size and have a good wool felt component as well. Check out the Spanish leather strop by fellow member Ambrose. It is the best finishing leather I have come across.

I had an Illinois/Bismark (same strop different names) as my first strop. While there is nothing wrong with it's quality, I greatly disliked the heavy canvas it uses for the linen component. I much prefer the wool felt component of the "starshavingsupplies" strop. The 2.5 inch wide strop is quite the bargain at $25 shipped:

There are bridle leather, horsehide, Dovo and cordovan at thesuperiorshave.com. My Dovo is destroyed now so I am looking into a new strop also.
