What's new

I thought I had enough

Having tried quite a few razors since starting DE shaving, I finally had it narrowed down to just 4 razors. I used the B/S/T and sold off several of the extra razors I no longer used or wanted. I had it down to just me 1904, and my HD, bot in straight bar and open comb, hence the 4 razors.

I did keep my barberpole HD, which I had only used 1 time. I thought it to be a bit big and heavy, but then I bought it when I first started DE shaving and of course I've learned much since then. When I used it again I found it to give a very nice shave.

Getting back to the reason for this post, having 2 open comb razors, and really enjoying using them when I have a 3 day or longer growth of beard, guess what I ordered last night? Yep, a HD barberpole open comb.

Here we go again. :cursing: :out: :whistling:

very cool.

Just wait till you try vintage Gillettes... there are hundreds of razors (ok, maybe dozens - nah. hundreds.) for you to try! Unless... you didn't get rid of Gillettes, did you?

In any case - congrats on your rediscovered and budding AD!

Yes I did. Just a few days ago I was ready to make the jump to straights, but since then, after much, much, MUCH thought and consideration, I've decided that my DE shaves are so really great that I'm going to stay with them. Guess I've got to, I've got a new DE on the way.  :w00t:

No Jon. No Gillettes, all mine were Merkur's.

I learned on the 1904 Merkur Classic (and the more I learn about vintage Gillettes, the more I wonder why they call it that). But if you've not tried any vintage Gillettes, (or GEMs or others), you're cheating yourself. Then again, maybe that's a good way to keep the RAD at bay .

One question though. How does one find oneself with a three day growth? (This from a guy who wore a full beard for +/- 20 years....)

That's easy T Rick: I'm retired, I can do what I want now, shave wise that is.  :w00t:

I assume you are wondering about the Merkur and not the Gillettes.

1904 is the year of Gillette's main patent.

But it is a good question! In 1904 (and for years afterward) all Gillettes were open comb, but the Merkur 1904 comes in both open comb and safety bar configurations. Also, the handle of the Merkur has a nice vintage look to it but I don't see any actual Gillette handles like it at http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Old Type/Old Type.htm.

So it is a bit of a mystery why Merkur calls it the "1904". Or do they? This may be one of the designations that was put on various Merkurs by distributors and retailers without any input from Merkur. That happens a lot with Merkur razors. Their actual designations (38C, 23C, etc.) do not make for good advertising. One retailer (West Coast Shaving) actually calls it the 1906!
