What's new

I shaved with a 5 blade cartridge razor today. for science.

Ok it was not really for science. I just found a ugly cartridge razor system in my bathroom cabinet (king of shaves - http://blogs.shave.com/king/wp-content/uploads/import/263-AzoriPhoneEdge.jpg), and I decided that I wanted to give cartridges a fair shake. Bare in mind I never liked this KOS razor. I bought it, used it a few times and can only assume I shoved it in the cupboard never to be used again.

These days I know all about proper prep and I use brilliant creams / soaps with a brush to create amazing lather as opposed to canned rubbish.

So I had a full 3 pass shave, pretty much doing everything the same way I would with my DE. Same prep, lather, aftershave. The only difference was the razor.

I was expecting an effortless, quick and comfortable shaving experience. In reality it was pretty much exactly how I remember it been before I learnt correct technique and prep. It was terrible! Despite only having 1.5 days worth of growth to deal with the razor struggled. It was not a nice experience and not one I shall repeat anytime soon.

The end result was a satisfactory shave. My cheeks are pretty much as close as if I went ATG with my DE razor, my neck area is no where near as close, it is very red and sore. I can feel the razor burn on my face (which is very warm). The shave was not even quicker than using the DE because I kept having to go over the same area to get any decent cutting (without pushing down hard).

Another lesson learnt... stick with the DE.

The reason I got a DE was that I couldn't believe how bad the Fusion was. I decided to leave my electric behind and got a Fusion. I had run out of the multi-blade disposables I had been using. I figured the Fusion would be great, it was top of the line, right? Awful! I have a light beard but I've never felt like a razor was pulling my hair out before, I sure did now. It was an uncomfortable shave all around and the dang head was so big I couldn't get it into a few tight spaces. The trimmer blade on the back only seemed suitable for giving me cuts. I couldn't seem to get it to work without bleeding.

I think cartridges peaked with the Atra with aloe strip. I liked the pivoting head compared with the Trac II and I've never gotten a better cartridge shave from something with more blades. I was going to get some disposable cartridges for travel but after reading your post I think I'll just get some Bic or Gillette single blade disposables instead.
