What's new

I said I would never go vintage . . .

. . . but it looks like I was a bit premature.

I'm not much of a collector anymore, and the whole vintage razor thing has left me a bit cold. Grandpa's razor, no thanks. And I've been happy with my Merkurs. Really. Even the ones I had to send back because of this or that issue. Even the ones that had tooling marks on them and misaligned heads.

Well, I bought some NOS blades on eBay, and wouldn't you know it but they came with a Gillette Super Adjustable. My initial thought was to sell the razor and recoup some of the cost, but I figured I should shave with it once. Just for kicks. So I dropped a blade into the silo ( a Derby, which has never worked for me) figuring that I'd shave half my face and finish up with the Merkur.

Well, I got a BBS shave. With a Derby. And a day's worth of beard. Not bad.

Dagnabbit, it wasn't supposed to be this way. I'm not supposed to get a better shave from a razor that is 39 years old.

I can't wait to pop a Super Stainless "Spoiler" in and give it a spin.

I'm glad to hear that the Merkur guys are finally stating to listen to me....

Enjoy the shave with the Spoiler...I hear RAD creeping in...

Yes sir, she's a Super beauty. Loves those adjustables!

The finest shaves I have ever gotten were with adjustables. My poor un-adjustable HD hangs on it's little hook looking all forlorn. Brings a tear to my eye.

I actually picked up two of these. Can a Slim adjustable and Fatboy be far behind?

I already have a Krona on the way. And a FS sign on the Merkur.

What gets me most about the whole thing is that I was using a Derby, a blade that I have never liked. I can only imagine how it will shave with a Red IP or NOS blade.

Shaving with an old razor can take you places.... time travel. It's not always a better shave, but it can be a more interesting shave.

I have never used a Merkur, but I do love my Gillettes, and I have tried several.

Be sure to try a Shark blade in it. I'd do so myself, with a razor like yours (not in as good condition), but I'm in the middle of a blade evaluation project with a Tech...

Whew, that's nice razor there!
Thanks! It does have some plate loss on the bottom, but the adjustment clicks are solid and the doors open without a hitch.

That will probably be my next blade, after I try a few more Derby's and an Iridium.

Indeed. I have had some better shaves from my old Merkur HD that I sold off, but I just didn't enjoy it as much. Something about my slim and toggle that I can't quite get over...and today, I add a fatboy to the bunch

Now extrapolate that experience into what will happen when you shave with a Gillette designed and produced when they still gave a damn about DE....:jump:
