There is a small connector just below the mirror and the hole is threaded. I am going to get this restored and was wondering what screwed into it.

Looks like it just should be a screw to lock the mirror and prevent it from turning on its own.
A candle holder?

Yeah, that's it. It holds a set-screw, so you can raise the mirror and hold it in place.
It doesn't look like the hole goes that deep. But if it does then I agree. A small thumbscrew (the type with a flat paddle) controlled the height/stopped the mirror from turning/stopped it from being pulled right out.

Yep, that's it.
The piece was twisted in that it did not line up with the hole in the post, but now I see how it works.
