What's new

I managed to break my DE89L

I was just out of the shower this evening, lathered up with Irisch Moos, and decided to drop a fresh Feather into the DE89L.

I tightened up the head and, suddenly, I felt it slip and the head came off. It seems that the screw in the top plate broke off and is now stuck in the handle. Dammit.

There is (of course) another razor or two or a couple dozen :)biggrin:) in the Den, so I dropped the new blade into a different razor and got a nice BBS, zero irritation, shave.

Anyhow, what did I do wrong? I've had this razor since January and it was a real favorite. I didn't tighten it more than I usually do and I've never broken any of the other razors.

I will pick up a replacement - the DE89L is a great shaver.

Also, I binned the razor after it happened. But it occurred to me that someone else might want the parts. I don't see how it could be easily repaired, but if someone wants it, I'll PIF the remains (CONUS only, please).

I would be very inclined to take a photo of the damage and send a friendly e-mail off to the manufacturer. Let them know that you participate here, have many razors and have never seen this happen before. In the worst case, they may simply tell you to take a hike, but it is well within the realms of possibility that they would offer a replacement.
Good luck anyway- a very kind gesture to offer to send the pieces as a PIF.

Or you tighten them too much and have been lucky with your other razors or something was wrong with your EJ. Contact them!

Sorry to hear about your accident; it luckily never happened to me sofar but would hate it when one of my favs would go like that!

Yes, contact the company first. They might just send you the replacement parts.

In case you're still looking to unload the razor, would gratefully take it. But you should see if the company will help you out first.

Best,
K.T.

The company ought to be willing to offer you a replacement for free. You can check with Edwin Jagger yourself, but you can also check with the vendor you purchased it from, since they sometimes have more pull than an individual customer.

Even if they won't replace it, the handle is probably something that many people on the board would readily buy, as it will fit on many 3 piece razors. :tongue_sm

It sounds a like a flaw in the metal cause this to happen and, therefore, it's a manufacturing defect. If there is a warranty, contact the manufacturer, as others have said in post. If you binned it, you may have a problem getting a replacement for free as most companies want to you return the defective item to them

Oh yeah, contact the manufacture. I sure would hope they would stand behind their product.

Hi -- Sorry to hear about your problem with the 89L. I would be interested to have the bottom plate of the head if you're still willing to PIF (I dropped my DE87 and put a nice dent in the corner of the bottom head, so....).

If this is OK, my address is:

Mike Santoro
42 West 24th Street
New York, NY
10010

Let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

I hope the company takes care of you and replaces the razor. If not you could remove the broken stud out of the handle with an easy out and use it on another head if you wanted. The company may also be willing to sell you a new top and then your razor would be as good as new.

You're no longer allowed to touch my headphones...

I've had better luck with audio gear so far!

Thank you, everyone, for the advice. I bought it from a local shop so I don't know if they'd replace it. I will drop EJ a line and see what they think - I still have the parts. If EJ doesn't want me to send it back, I'll still PIF the parts.

Uncle Erik,

I'd be happy to take the DE89L handle off of your hands if no other option works out. You wouldn't have to PIF it either. I'm sure I could give you a few bucks for it. I hope for your sake things work out though. Parting out such a nice razor would really suck.

You haven't been in Hong Kong the past month have you? My R89 handle broke a few weeks back and I suddenly remembered this thread...

Ouch!!! Here I was thinking of getting rid of all razors but the DE89... but now I'm thinking maybe I should have a spare hanging around (perhaps purchase another DE89 )

By the way, any luck with EJ regarding helping you replace this?

Sounds like several people have already requested the PIF, but I have also been looking for a DE89L handle if none of them take it off your hands.
