What's new

I know you're sick of hearing this...

...because I've searched it and seen the question posed many times.

However, I've never seen two people recommend the same cologne as an alternative to the Musgo Real splash, and although I'm not usually a cologne guy (this is actually my first post in this forum!), I just love Musgo Real that much.

I understand that it's probably vetiver that I'm looking for, and that none of the Musgo Real colognes will suffice.

Any ideas? I'm pretty clueless in the EDC scene.

This may be wrong, but I tried Trumpers' Eau de Portugal once, and it seemed to remind me a little bit of the Musgo Real AS.

Trumper's Portugal is made up of almost-entirely fruit notes -- orange, lemon, neroli, musk, etc. It's very sweet and doesn't last as long as Musgo AS, ironically, even though it's classified as an EDT.

The Musgo Real splash is pretty unique. I doubt you'll find a cologne to exactly replicate it. Maybe you can mix two different colognes or just buy two bottles of the MR splash and do the "boil down" trick: pour one of the bottles into a pot and boil it down to the essence, and add the "essence" to the other bottle of splash, thereby creating a stronger scent. I've never done this myself but people have done it with Ivy Club Spice AS to make a cologne.

I reckon you should get some Guerlain Vetiver. It's well within your budget if you buy it online (ebay or amazon). Some may say that Guerlain Vetiver, is not quite suitable for someone who's 20 but I think it's just perfect for anyone.

Musgo Real really has a unique and wonderful smell. Guerlain EDT is an excellent suggestion though. I use it myself after the Musgo and it is a harmonious combination.

Also, would like to recommend Royall Vetyver. Again with the vetiver, it works really well as an EDT after MUSGO. Plus it's darker and smokier than Guerlain which works especially well with Musgo in the Fall.

Finally, I'm going to try Grigio Perla after MUSGO once it comes in the mail...actually, I've been on the exact same quest as you: find the perfect cologne to match Musgo splash. Grigio is my latest experiment. Will report back on whether the combo works.

Boiling MR down sounds like a good experiment! I'm kind of loath to risk my single bottle right now, so I might try it when I get the opportunity to acquire a second.

I looked up Guerlain Vetiver but it sounds like it might be a little more citrusy than I want. I'm also trying to find reviews for Royall Vetiver but having little luck. Maybe I'll just blind buy one of the two. I really wish I could smell something before I bought it, though.

Oh, well. Even computers have limits, I guess.

Thanks for the suggestions!

...oils are metastable ... end point of a reaction...destherify under high heat...relative to the evaporation rate...screw the lid on...best of luck!

Good point and good advice! I'm glad I haven't tried boiling any poor, innocent splashes yet.

Two questions, though. Why wouldn't you just use an open jar? Also, why did you make me look up "desterify"? I was hoping to use those brain cells for something else.

IMO, Musgo Real can be worn as a cologne since it is fairly strong. On me it lingers almost all day.

I've always thought that mixing GFT Spanish Leather and GFT Wild Fern would smell similar to Musgo Real, but have never tried it. The SL would provide the musky, patchouli leathery aspect, and the GFT would provide the green notes. It would be missing the vetiver notes, and lavender (which I don't think is advertised as in MR, but I smell it nonetheless).

Ding, ding, ding...WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!! Grigio Perla is an excellent match for musgo real!!!!!!!!! Just got it in the mail and tried it out!

Whoever that guy was on Basenotes who originally reviewed this stuff sure knows the score. Grigio Perla is 100% barbershop delight. An Italian barbershop, located near a pine forest, with basil & ferns and oakmoss. This stuff is GREAT! There is nothing synthetic smelling about this frag to my nose.

It's somewhat similer to Rive Gauche, except it's not as sweet and powdery (doesn't seem to have the lavender / anise or geranium notes), it's more fresh and green. Man, I'm in love.

This stuff will go great after a splash of Musgo Real. The scent is in the ballpark, especially on the drydown, although it does not have the earthiness (pachuli/vetiver?) that Musgo has. None-the-less, a match made in heaven.

Someone needs to write a review of this stuff on B&B because I think many, many members will love this stuff!
