What's new

I know it's no surprise

But you guys weren't kidding about blades acting differently in different razors!

I put a Personna Lab Blue in my 70's Super Speed, and had a horrible shave. Lots of irritation, more blood than I've ever drawn, itching on my neck that kept me up at night. This bummed me out, especially considering how well regarded the blade is.

I switched back to my Merkur 23c, and loaded it with a Gillette Silver Blue. This wasn't doing it for me either. I had to add an extra pass, and it still wasn't getting all the stubble.

So I swapped them.

The Personna was better in my Merkur. I still may not like them, but at least the shave was much more comfortable. The Silver Blue was miles better in the Super Speed. Gave me a DFS+ today.

Many people seem to have had this experience of different blades being horrible in one razor and then better in another. I don't seem to have that experience. A blade that I think is great is usually great in every razor I try it in, and on the other hand a horrible blade for me is horrible in every razor.

Yes, I find this true. I always say, and find, that blades perform differently in different razors also. But I find a certain type of blade enhances or degrades the attributes of a razor. As with you, I never had a blade perform like the OP posted as doing. I'm sure it happens, just never with me and my beard.

To be more detailed, I dislike derby blades. In a gold ball end Tech I have to really work at it to get a DFS with a derby blade. Extra passes, taking extra time, blade buffing, etc.

Now take the same derby blade and pop it into my Merkur Futur. The aggressiveness makes the blade able to efficiently cut where previously it couldn't.

You can swap those around if I were using a Feather blade.

So I can see how someone new DE razor shaving might blame a blade for not behaving to their liking. but until you have a large variety of razors and blades, and compare them together as a whole do you see how... just with everything in this world...

A tool is built to fufill a specific role! I can get a good shave out of any combination, but some combinations make it easier than others because it was built for it.
