What's new

I just bought a 1000 g cube!

On amazon it was $27 shipped of 72% olive oil Marseilles soap. I'll have to cut it up myself and see how it works. I also plan to use in it the shower.

Is that what the "Cube" is? A block of Marseilles olive oil soap? Must get another as I like it as a bath soap.

Hate to tell you that my local health/whole food shop down the road sells it for about £3.50 and I thought that was a bit expensive but worth it! Mind you, I don't think it was a kilo but it was far too big to use without hacking it up into a few pieces.

Thanks for the reminder, I'll be passing the shop tomorrow.

His Sandalwood cube, primer what ever it is, is a really great bath soap. It also not surprisingly works very will as a face (not shaving) soap and leaves my dry forehead and nose moisturized.

I noticed that on Amazon they have scented Marseilles soap. Anyone used this? Maybe a nice change giving a little scent with your shave. The crushed local flower variety seems interesting, but don't want it to clog my razor!

l'epi de provence soap rounds for scented

I saw the scented cubes but they only sell them priced higher in one size and I was looking for economies of scale. Hopefully this will last me a year or more. No more body washes or expensive drying soaps. I'm getting tired of wasting on inferior product. I also like that this is the exact same thing they've been using for 1000 years using the same methods by hand.

That sounds like an amazing bath soap.

the sandalwood one is the soap round from L'epi de provence. I also like how it works on the face and plan to toss out the cetaphil for good. :sneaky2: cheaper, all natural, and more effective

The primer/soap I got from Charles is very close to that soap, if not that one exactly. There are seeds and whatnot in it. Using the cloth, any rough plant matter is trapped there when I squeeze or "milk" off the soap and cutting balm lather.

Great info, thanks.

Time to search Amazon and ebay.

Here the B&B review

and here's a good website for product description

You can see the scented is $12 for 300 grams. The unscented is $20 for 1000 grams. Maybe there is a reason Charles only recommends the unscented SdM for skin sensitivity purposes.

So, looking at the French Soaps website, it appears that the olive oil soap comes in "Original" and "Hard Milled". I bet the Hard Milled would stand up better to the soaking in water to prep the primer and the scrubbing by the shave cloth. Plus, the pic of the Hard Milled imprint looks like the one bar I got from Charles. Thoughts on this? Is the milled soap the one we're using, or does the original work? I mention this because on the Amazon review of the original soap, one person said that they tried to cut their soap and it crumbled. Charles sure seems to have no problem cutting his.

I'm not really familiar with exactly what soap Charles is using. I do know that he uses a hack saw to cut his soap up.

It seems to me Charles uses the original version as he sells the 400 g cube and the hard milled does not have a 400 g size.

As mentioned by Gafer above, the cube that Charles uses is made by Naprodis. It is either the one available directly on their website, or it is a special formulation produced to CAR's specifications. The new primers are made by la lavande, and the rounds are made by l'epi de provence. other primers may very well work, but you won't find exactly what CAR uses at the french soaps place.

It seems to me with all the variations of primers that even Charles uses, that the exact primer used doesn't matter so much so long as it is - French, bears the mark Marseille, and olive oil.

Well, not exactly. Neither the rounds or the newish soap primers are olive-oil based, nor are they Marseilles-type. In addition, the primer Charles currently uses is a pure palm oil primer. Marseilles type, but not olive oil based. Charles does prefer soaps of French origin, though, even if they are distributed through US companies. However, the original cube is not French in origin, but is French- like.
