What's new

I have the secret ingredients now.

I picked these up at a local India market in Sayreville NJ for about 11 bucks. It is all the key ingredients for shaving cream or soap minus the soap base or cake. I wonder how many almond shave soaps could I get out of this 3 dollar bottle of oil. I wonder if I could add the liquid Glycerin to products that need more of it in my bowl. Castor Oil too is found in most bath products. Does anyone think it is possible to melt down an unscented bar of soap and add these in a trial an error fashion and use the Hazlenut oil next. How much could we save in dollars by doing this ourselves and what could we create.

Why would you add these oils and also glycerin? You will have no lather if you add too much. Brambleberry has 10 pounds of shave soap for under 30 bux. Here's the ingredients.

Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Safflower Oil, Glycerine (kosher, of vegetable origin), Purified Water, Sodium Hydroxide (saponifying agent), Sorbitol (moisturizer), Sorbitan oleate (emulsifer), Soy bean protein (conditioner), Wheat Protein (conditioner)

Give it a shot. I think you might need to learn a little about the soap making process though. From reading through some of the soap maker's posts on the boards it doesn't seem as easy as just adding those ingredients to an unscented soap.

Other than that, it looks like you have the makings of a decent pre-shave.

For $11, I'll dial up one of the vendors from here and buy a couple bars before I blow up my kitchen.

You never know, what about the guy from the Monkee's Mickey Dolenz. Was it his mother who invented White Out in her kitchen. I could be the next Aramis, or L'Oreal with over weight, semi balding men on the runway showing off their new look. Either that or flying around in my Model T with the Shaggy Dog making a lot of money on basketball shoes. Those under 28 see imdb Son of Flubber for joke clarification.

I melt in about a quarter bar of plain glycerin soap into my VDH and it makes a stiffer lather and I think is even better for my face. I also make my own aftershave with alcohol, witch hazel, water, glycerin, saccherin and then enough cologne to give it the smell I am looking for at a faction of the price. Add a few drops of vegtable coloring and put it into a fancy bottle and you have a real conversation piece. I am playing around with EVOO as a preshave (I found it takes very little or you will gum up the works). Experimenting is good and glycerin won't change to nitroglycerin unless you add a few things and heat . . . .

Experimenting is good, usually,

It was Michael Nesmith's mom.

The hardest thing about soap making is the correct proportion of all the ingredients.

Spoken in the fashion of a right thrifty Scottsman!! Just keep an eye out for the guy from Castrol whackin ya with a car antenna.

I'd do some resarch on the Glycerin before I do anything like apply heat. Rooster Cogburn is one of my favorite movies but I don't fancy being on a wooden raft with crates of explosive shaving soap.
