What's new

I got excited

As soon as I saw this come up, I did a quick search and it seemed like a good deal, so I bought it. Did I do good or was I rash?

Right, I see it's a different handle. So I should look for a ball end old type handle. In brass? From my perspective, if I like it as a shaver for myself I'd probably prefer to use the star razor handle, but from a antique/vintage perspective I'd be far better off having an original am I correct?
Was $65 a decent price to pay?

In the description the seller says it's nickel or chrome plated, you should be able to find one of those. And yes, it should have the correct handle for it to be a proper set.

Thanks. The antique dealer in town is bringing in his collection of 100 razors for me to look at tomorrow, any tips on finding the right handle? Was I on the right track with the link above?

All things considered, you probably did ok, if it cleans up as nicely as the seller suggests. It sounds a little steep at first, especially considering that it lacks the proper handle, but replacements are plentiful and most cases like that have considerable wear and/or have lost the lining on the inside.

If you want to be as strictly original as possible you're going to be looking for a nickel-plated ball-end handle that has the "PAT. NOV. 15, '04" inscription on it. If it's missing the inscription it's from a later model Old Type, and you wouldn't want a silver-plated one for this particular set.

A bit of advise. Do NOT jump at buying from this gent with all those razors. I know you'll see stars but resist the temptation. Better to take his name and number go learn first a little more about collecting than be parted with your hard earned $$$. This isn't a race, although it feels like it but most of the best finds you will get are when your NOT looking for it.
Cheers!

Ack, nickel. Forget what I said about them being plentiful.

Unfortunately the antique dealer won't be in until next week :(

In the meantime, is this a gillette old razor that would go with this set? Looks correct to my untrained eye;

Sorry, no better image available. What's a fair price for these if it is?

That case is in great condition and would be worth the money by itself as its hard to find these service sets with good condition cases.

That's the right type of razor, but the particulars are going to be tougher to tell from that photo. It looks like it's probably nickel plated, but you'd need to have a look at the handle to see that it's got the patent date inscription on it to know whether it's old enough. If it doesn't then it's just a later '20s era Old Type (which would match the case that it's in there, too, by the way).

Thanks, it'll look great on the shelf I think, being a military man myself.

Right, thanks. Looks like finding a 1917 old type ball end with nickel plating might take me a while...
