What's new

I do like Wilkinson Sword blades

Just started shaving the DE way. My first and only DE Shaver is a Muhle R 89...what craftsmanship...very impressive. In fact I would call it a shaving instrument, due to it's robustness, workmanship and as an all around, top notch piece of eye candy.

I'm trying different blades from my sampler pack...so far I've used three different makes of blades with a number to go. I understand that it's important to try a number of different brands to see which one works best for you and your shaver.

So far:

  • Derby-came with the Muhle. Ok but I did nick myself a lot. In fact my fist shave looked like Moe of the three stooges was doing the work. I'm not blaming the Derby at all...think it was beginner screwups . I used the Derby for 4 days...will try another later.
  • Gillette...Ok....used for 4 days...getting better each day.
  • Wilkinson Sword- wow ! First shave today...this blade seems to work very well...for me.

I've got Merkur Super, Feather, Precision-Persona, Astra to try.

So far Wilkinson Sword is in the lead. :001_smile

Great! What kind of Wilkinsons are you using? Vintage UKs, German white packs, Walmart US/Schick sliders, or the India black-labels?

They came in a white pack. I'm new to DE shaving so I'm not sure, but coming in a white pack does that mean these WS blades were made in Germany ?

Does WS have different factories in different countries and are there any differences in blade quality determined by their factory of origin ?

I ask because at this point I'm considering making these WS in the white pack my daily blade and I would like to continue getting the same blade quality.

I recently purchased some Gillette/Wilkinson Sword blades from India. Says right on the package Wilkinson Sword made by Gillette India. They're great! I get about 4-5 shaves each.

I try to grab a couple of packs whenever I am forced to walk through the doors of a Wal-Fart. The ones I have bought all say they are made in Germany. That's not an indicator of quality IMO, but the blades give me good shaves.

Up here in Canada....WalMart does not seem to carry any DE razor blades. Also my white packet Wilkinson Sword razors have no country of origin, marked either on the blades or the packaging.

Schick mfrs Wilkinson blades in Germany. I'm not sure if they still produce any in Britain. What's potentially confusing is that in India the Wilkinson trademark is owned by Gillette.

To add to this mix is the fact that Gillette has apparently changed the packaging on their Indian-made Wilkinsons (again!) and now the tucks say "Gillette Wilkinson". The trademark Wilkinson crossed swords are still there.

Good luck!

And there is the Wilkinson Economie which is still are major stores in France where the packaging clearly still says made in U.K, but is it really true???

You know, with all the uncertainty, secrecy, and rumor flying around our little corner of the world, the only truth I know is that I just don't know.

I have a feeling I'll be splitting a tray of mussels with Mussolini before all the dust from the past two weeks settles.

AIUI when Wilkinson's parent company tried to sell it to Gillette the competition regulators in the US and the EU forced them to sell the North American and European operations to Schick in order to prevent Gillette monopolizing those markets. This left Gillette with the WS brand in Latin America and Asia. So WS blades in Europe are Schicks, WS blades in South America and India are Gillettes, and the Brazilian-made WS blades in Australian supermarkets say "distributed by P&G" so they're presumably Gillettes as well. This causes massive confusion in the review threads because people are comparing totally different blades made by different companies in different plants.

Brazil is in South-America / Latin-America, so that would indeed be Gillette.

Confusion? Don't be silly!
