What's new

I believe I've found something

I''l post pics as soon as I can. I was at a flea market recently and happened to walk by a booth selling two razors complete in cases with blades. At $30 for both of them I figured "why the hell not?" and bought them on a whim.

One is a Hoffritz slant bar that came complete with case and several types of razor blades that I've never heard of (3 Shelly, 1 Enderes, 1 Purple, 1 fan, and 4 Monogram).

The other is what I believe to be a Gem Ever Ready SE (also in case with 3 Smith blades, and 1 Take Off blade)

I've been itching to try these two razors out but haven't had the time nor the facial hair growth to really treat my face with these two razors.

Sounds like a nice score. The Hoffritz slant bar is a desirable razor. I've never tried a slant, but the Gem/Ever-Ready SEs are some of my favorite shavers. Just don't try using those vintage blades. They make look fine, but the edges are probably rusty or corroded and will tear you up. Stick with modern SS blades.

I suggest that you use new production blades when you take them for a spin.
Also, since you're new to the forum and may not have seen it before, the 101 Dalmatians "pipe puffing" gif is one of our little signs that we're waiting for pictures. Supply some when you can!

Update pictures included. I decided to use the Hoffritz today because I was running short on time and didn't want to learn that I don't know how to properly SE shave. I did my usual pre-shave prep of a hot shower while leaving my brush to soak and then lathered up with my Proraso shaving cream. For the razor blade I used a fairly new(only used once before) feather blade(I love the feathers, unbelievably sharp and efficient with the added bonus of being unforgiving to really make you learn good technique.).

The Shave: I did a fairly standard(for me) two pass shave; WTG, XTG, rinsing with hot water and re-lathering between each pass.

The Razor: The Hoffritz performed impeccably giving me a smooth, lovely, irritation free shave. The detail I particularly like about this razor is that it has no trouble getting the under-the-nose area which my Merkur longhandle does. I wouldn't say that it's an aggressive razor, I didn't get any nicks or weepers and my technique can't be all that flawless yet. I would term it as being more efficient, or economical than my Merkur. All in all an excellent razor, I'll definitely be shaving with this more often. We'll have to see how it performs on a day that I decide to do a three pass BBS shave but those won't be occurring in the near future.

And now, the moment you have all be waiting for:

Excellent!

Man, I had told myself I wasn't interested in slants... But that razor looks so cool. I might have to hunt one down someday.

Nice score! I am sure you will like the SE!

Those marks are zamak rot. It's the plating lifting off. It shouldn't cause too much trouble in the short run. just don't pick at it.

Once it starts though, you can slow it down by drying the part really well and putting a clear coat of nail polish or lacquer over the bad spots. That will smooth it out and keep it from getting wet.

Zamak razors are like skittles. They are shiny and sweet on the outside, but the insides will dissolve in water.

It'll be a little while, I need to find some good SE blades since I don't have have any except the vintage ones that came with the razor. What's the general reccomendation for SE blades?

You can pick up in most major pharmacies. There is a thread on this very subject one forum over (single edge razors subforum)

I passed on a super slant once that just had a tremendous amount of it on the cap.
