What's new

I am in love with a Fat Boy

Today I tried my '59 Fat Boy with a blue Crystal blade set on 3. I did 1 WTG pass followed by 2 XTG passes in opposite directions, and it was one of my favorite shaves to date!! The razor felt great, my technique is improving, and everything just seemed to click!! WHAT have you guys done to me???? I am obsessed with this whole DE shaving/shaving products hobby, and I LOVE IT!!

On a side note, what is the best way to take care of my Fat Boy? I rinse it out and dry it thoroughly after use. I heard somewhere on the boards about soaking it in a container of mineral oil for a while? If so, how often and for how long?

Congrats on the great results from your Fat Boy.

The most important thing to keep your Fat Boy in good shape is to dry it after you rinse it. I don't think you need to soak it in mineral oil.

Lube it at the various bearing points with a drop of mineral oil, and scrub the head area with a toothbrush every so often - it will never do you wrong!:thumbup1:

Can you tell I'm a BIG fan?:biggrin1:

I love your enthusiasm!
The Fat Boy is definitely one of the best razors around. If you like, try a Slim out for comparison. Be careful, RAD can get expensive!

Yeah, the Fatboy's my favorite, and I use it non-adjustably. It's just a great razor, even without taking advantage of the adjustability.

I like the FB also. I use it in rotation with a Progress and Slim. After shaving and cleaning off the razor and drying it, I dip it for a minute in alcohol. :001_smile

The FB is a great razor no doubt, but my super adjustable has been getting some love lately, I think the longer handle is a little easier for a noob like me.

I love my fatboy too. I have two of them. One is a regular fatboy. The other - gold tone Executive. I started out with a regular fatboy on setting 3 about a year ago. Later on I tried settings 4 & 5. Now I am using my fatboy executive on setting 9 as it turned out to be nonadjustable (flawed).
However, I discovered that this setting is the best for my face. I think it brings out the best qualities of the blade I am currently using (Red IP). I really don't know if it is the blade or the combination of the blade & the setting 9 that makes the blade go strong even after my 18th shave this morning (still smooth & sharp). Amazing.

How do you dry it exactly? I'm guessing you remove the blade first?
Then just rub a hand towel over it?

I've got a Fatboy that I've only used once, and I feel it's time to pull it back out and see what she can do. What setting do you all recommend? I'm using Derbys at the moment.

I've read the Fatboy's are pretty mild, but I'm still using it on 3 (noob). Getting nice shaves though !

I love my fat boy, I use a setting of four with Astra blades. It gives a great shave everyday. I have a few other Gillette Vintage razors. DE wet shaving is so luxurious and wonderful. Why we evolved into cartridges with horrible shaves is beyond me. Give a vintage DE Fat Boy over any multi-blade disater
