Hype and Panic

Well I was reflecting today at a phenomenon that usually occurs on these boards. Hype of a product, everyone buying it up, and then no one ever uses the product again. Here are a few things that I have seen that were OMG...I NEED IT NOW...

The Bearded Lady Shaving soaps ( cant remember the official name) but wow...that one tanked fast.

Saddleback Leather: This is a quality product that everyone was hyping. I myself have one and am pleased except for the weight when fully loaded. This is another one that everyone talked about, then Poof....it disappeared.

Praire Creations: This one went by the wayside because of order issues..

My main thought is what exactly causes this feeding frenzy. Whos opinion makes this the "must have" item, and then why does it lose favor so quickly?

We're retro shavers and often in search of something reminiscent of an era we didn't live in. We want to experience something we haven't experienced before.

This things engage the hunting and gathering instinct which we inherited from the cave men. I would call that the hook.

Then the Buddhists have the story of the monkey and his similarity to mankind. The monkey is fascinated by an object, he picks it up, he plays with it, he gets tired of it and he moves on to to a new toy. Continually. It's the form of madness we engage in to keep us busy until...er.. the curtain comes down.

Great post.

Bearded Lady = Madame Scodioli. I think the popularity of this one had to do with trying something new, the unique scents, and the marketing. I think the only reason it didn't live longer is because as guys really started using the soaps, they noticed the irritation caused by a high level of fragerance oils. The soaper was going to change her formula, but I think it caused people to move on.

I haven't experienced exactly what you pointed out. I do, however, panic when I get a product that is raved about and then I love it too and then paranoia sets in that it could be pulled from the market and I'll never get to order more. So, I agonize on whether to stock up on it or not.

Great question.

Plisson brushes are another hyped product. I was previously guilty of that.

yes. Thanks for the brushes, Mike.

...and I've passed them on as well.

I hope the hysteria for Old Spice shaving soap passes soon. I'm down to only eight cakes in backup.

I remember when I first started researching wetshaving, nearly everyone seemed to love Nancy Boy shaving cream to the ends of the earth. But I rarely hear it talked about now. It isn't dead per say, there are the occasional refrence to it, but it isn't nearly as talked about as the three T's, MWF, Tabac, Cella, etc. Even though many people thought that it was on par or even better than those products. I will eventually get it to try out myself...

EDIT: Just noticed that the little phrase below my name is Nancy Boy Nanny.

Right now the hype is for P160. Great stuff, but Cella, Razorock, and others are excellent. The news that it will be discontinued has elevated it's status. I will surely miss it, but something new to crave is just around the corner.:thumbup1:

It could be just human nature (and hype too), to go-with-the-flow with what is 'most' talked about in our threads and life (I think the social professionals call it a 'fad').

I kept seeing the Nancy Boy Nanny title, but never knew what Nancy Boy was until this post. Thanks!

I think the hype about P.160 is a little different. Trying to snatch up the last of a great product is different than hype about a new product. But yes, P.160 is probably the most hyped product right now.

Great post, it is about they desire to try something new, it's exciting and can be great or a let-down, but the anticipation is always fun.

This place thrives on it.

I still have a big stack of Cade soap from when it was "gone forever".

I like the fads we start best. A few years ago a butterscotch shaving brush was "sun damaged Bakelite". Now it is "Vintage rich orange Catalin" and the prices have gone through the roof. Thanks Fidjit. :biggrin1:

Prairie Creations: This one went by the wayside because of order issues..

She is banned here, due to those order issues, and her attitude when that situation arose (as I remember it). The product still exists, and may even be improved over what it once was (I have no experience with the newer rendition of the product line).

Being banned from the largest wet shaving community makes it pretty hard to effectively promote your products.:lol::001_rolle:001_rolle

When I joined, La Toja Sensitive seemed to be one of the most talked about creams around here. It was the thing to have, now it's rarely mentioned.
I just got around to buy it last week, and it is indeed a great product. But the hype seems to have faded away with time...

Maybe I can start the ball rolling with subliminal messages. You must buy Confiança creams now!

I saw some others have posted and I think it might be fun. What was being hyped when you started?

For me, Livi razors were the must have along with hand american strops, Norton hones, and mama bear soaps.
