How do the makers cause all the brush bristles to stick together. A shot of hair spray or something that washes out in first shave? They are so pretty when new. After first use the bristles never seem to look so neat. How do they do it?
No trickery here. That's just how Boar breaks in. Actually, badger does this to an extent - but not as much as boar, and far more "evenly". Some boars (Semogue, I'm looking at you) splay a lot more than others (Omega, how DO you keep so tidy?).
I'm wondering if my Semogue 830 splays so much because they've packed a lot of extra hairs in there, mostly around the outside? Don't know, but it's really got the punked out look going for it while drying.
I've seen some older and also newer but less-expensive boar brushes that have what I'll term "cowlicks" for want of a better descriptor. Kind of twist and bunch up in clumps. Tried to get that to quit by shampoo, conditioner, numerous soapings and dryings, breaking in. Helped a little but never got those to completely reform. Curious to know why, and whether good boar makers avoid that by hair selection or some treatment.
When completely dried out and stroked a bit, both my Semogue and Omega look pretty well-groomed. Plus some other boars. It's that in-between stage that's sorta weird.
