How to save a knot from a broken handle?

Hi all. I have a Crabtree and Evelyn brush by Edwin Jagger. It has a huge chunk out of it where it was dropped. I want to take the hair out of the broken handle and put it in a new lathe turned cherry handle. Any advice on how to get the knot out of the handle? I took a reciprocating saw blade by hand and cut a line straight line from bottom to top on each side hoping it would just split apart, but instead it just flaked off chunks. Thanks in advance!

I have the opposite question if you don't mind my tagging along in this thread ... I have a wonderful large Emillion handle with a defective knot. Can the knot be easily removed so that I could put a new knot into it?

Getting a knot out of a broken handle requires some care, but can be done. Steaming it is liable to ruin the knot. I would start by covering the hair in cloth or paper, to protect it. The next step is to apply just enough force to break up the handle, without damaging the knot. You could use a vise if you have one, tightening it gradually. Or you can use a hammer. Take a look at the links below for more information.

Keeping the handle and removing the knot is the easier question. If the handle is modern resin and you do not care about the knot, you can steam it out. I have used a simple stovetop bamboo steamer for this, with a Rooney 3/1 (via Penworks) handle. There will probably be glue left ofter, which you will have to drill out. To remove a knot and put a new one in an existing handle is easy! Just drill the old knot out and put a new one in.
Removing a knot from a broken handle is not quite as easy! I normally chuck the broken brush and turn the knot free.
I have no experience with the steaming method, but with the modern epoxy glues this might be a tough task to do.
Kent brushes are easy to do, their knot is set in either a stainless steel or plastic cup, one whack with a hammer breaks the handle and the knot is free.
