How to Create Hot Lather

Hey Friends,
I noticed when I try to create hot lather in my mug with shave cream it cools down by the time it reaches my face. I'll be switching over to soap this weekend but had a question regarding how to create the hottest lather. I do not want to purchase a $40 moss Scuttle. I would like to know if a chrome or metal bowl would sufice in heating the soap if I poured hot water on the metal or chrome bowl. If anybody can help I would apprieciate it. Even if you have your own tecniques on how to create the hottest lather with shave soap.

P.S.
can I create hot lather out of a wooden bowl

Thanks

Welcome to B&B.

Before I bought my Moss Scuttle (worth it!), I would fill my sink with HOT water and put my empty shaving bowl in the water. It's the exact same concept as the pottery scuttle -- an empty vessel surrounded by scalding hot water. A metal bowl will transmit heat faster than ceramics, plastics, etc., but that also means it loses heat much faster than those other mediums. In other words, your hot lather will cool very quickly in a metal bowl once you take the bowl out of the hot water.

I do not like using wooden bowls. The wood absorbs water, and can easily warp. I stick to ceramic or pottery. Target sells a bowl called a dipping bowl that is very popular for lathering. The bowl is slightly smaller than a cereal bowl.

Good luck!

I own the Moss, its for face lathering not really for making lathe. I have the Georgetown scuttle, great for making warm cream. I have the German scuttle great for hot cream. I have the old Victorian scuttle off ebay for a song , by keeping your brush submerged in hot water , in theory your hot brush should give you slightly warm soap lather. If you want a scuttle made to your specifications I believe the lady at Dirty Bird pottery can help you.

I think this. You can play forever with a home made jerry rigged scuttles and in the end its going to be more trouble than its worth. Its more convenient just to put up the cash and get the one you want. I may have arguements with my scuttles but I don't want to really be without them. In the summer using soap I do it out of a mug but in winter its nice to have warm lather.

The scuttle does not have to be new. Advertise as a want to buy on BB and SMF and you will get responses. I advertised for a Moss on SMF and got several offers quickly. I got a large for $50 shipped, and it was like new. I have seen all the scuttles come up for sale on BB at one time or another.

good luck

I place my lather bowl (ceramic) on a coffee cup warmer, which sells for about $10.00. As long as the warmer is plugged in and switched on, I have hot lather. I've also tried placing the bowl in the sink filled with hot water, but I prefer the cup warmer.

I have a large apothecary mug that works well. Fill sink with hot water with the mug and brush in it to soak. I pull out the brush leaving the mug full, load the brush with soap and face lather. When I am done with the brush I empty the mug leaving it in the sink and toss the brush in. Next pass pull out the brush fill with sink water and repeat. Warm lather throughout.

Prior to my Georgetown Scuttle, I used to use a two-piece chip dip container made out of pottery. I would fill the lower half (in the pic below) with scalding hot water and the top with water. Then I would shower.

Afterwards, I would dump the water, refill the lower half and shave. Worked great until I had the burning desire to drop the cash and get the GtP...I'm glad I did!
