How to clean old strop?

I bought a civil war era strop. nice leather but has some stains on it. how do i clean the leather or at least kill the germs. I'm thinking about leaving it under the sun for a day to let UV light kill some of the germs. any links or suggestions? thanks

Saddle soap will work or you could whip up some lather from a tallow based shaving soap and apply it to the surface let sit for a minute then wipe clean repeat if necessary.

shaving foam and pumice stone... lather up the leather and rub the stone against it. the stone helps rejuvenate the leather
