How should boots fit?

Hi everyone, I just bought a pair of Wolverine 1000 mile boots, and they are beautiful but I have a question about fit. My heel fits perfectly in them, and even if I don't lace them up, there is maybe only 1/8 inch of back and forth movement on my foot. However, there seems to be a lot of room in the front part of the boot, especially in the toe box. There is maybe almost a whole inch of space between my big toe and the front of the boot. I have read that boots are supposed to be more roomy, but I'm not exactly sure this is what they mean. Should I return these and size down in length but go up in width to an E in order to reduce the toe room, or is this just how they are made? Thank you!

My Wolverine 1000 Mile boots fit EXACTLY the same way. I normally wear an 8.5 - 9, and I bought these in an 8. They fit like a glove everywhere but the toe box. Stylistically, though, they have somewhat of a pointed toe. My logic is that a human foot doesn't come to a point, so there's bound to be extra space in a pointed toe box.

There is no slipping at all, but this could just be due to me lacing them up tight. If I undo the laces, I can without much difficulty put a finger behind my heel. Is that too loose?

If your foot isn't slipping, they may not be too long. Is the ball of your foot at the point in the boot where it looks like it is supposed to bend when your foot bends as you take a step?

I bought a pair of cowboy boots recently, and got a wider size than I normally wear, but they still made my foot hurt. I took them back to try another style, and the salesman, who was a different guy and actually the guy who repairs boots and has worked there for 30 years, had me put them on and take a step or two in them. He brought me another pair, one size longer and one size narrower, and they fit perfectly. He explained the problem with the other boots was that the ball of my foot was too far forward in them because they were too short for where the ball is supposed to sit, not too short for the end of my toes.

The ball of my foot is a little behind the part where its supposed to bend, but only by maybe 1/3 inch. From the way it sounds, it really seems like I should size down 1/2 and go with a 7.

Sounds like you should try the 7 in the same width and see if that fits better, if the width wasn't a problem in the current boot. You could always try a 7 in the next wider width if they feel too tight.
