What's new

How much is too much?

I just purchased a bottle of Floris No. 89 EDT and should be arriving next week. To the gentlemen who have worn this scent how much should be applied without being over powered.

Regards,

That's going to vary based on your personal chemistry. Floris scents disappear on me after a few hours, but for some they go all day.

Well, let's see...

You could start with 30 sprays and see how you like that,

Or you could start with one spray, and see if that's enough. If it's NOT enough, you would THEN have the option of using another spray. If and when that 2nd spray occurs, you will be in a better position to evaluate whether a third spray would be necessary. In the instance that the aforementioned 3rd spray occurs, you will have essentially sprayed the cologne onto yourself three times. With three sprays on your body, you will then be able to ask yourself whether a fourth spray is indeed justified. Now, since we've hypothetically applied four sprays now, a logical conclusion that we might arrive upon would be that if more scent is still needed, a fifth or even sixth spray might be needed. Beyond this, is seven sprays. To these seven sprays, more sprays can be added - anywhere from one to fourteen more sprays. If all additional fourteen sprays are utilized, we will have now expended 21 sprays in all. Now add 9 sprays. Where are we? BANG! Right back to 30 sprays. That's where. If, upon further evaluation, you think that you need more than 30 sprays, feel free to send me a private message and I will provide further instructions.

Thank God you don't give people advice for a living.

Regards,

30 sprays is not a lot. Pretty normal application. Spray to each heel 2 sprays, backs of the knees 2 sprays, elbows 2 sprays, shoulders 2 sprays, chest 3-4 sprays, wrist 2 sprays, neck 3 sprays, abdomen area 4-5 sprays, then the hair 2-3 sprays, then spray the outer shirt about 3 sprays. There, that's right at 30.

One on chest is ok; careful with two

Thank you...as an individual who normally wears after shaves and has never purchased a high end EDT before I didn't realize I was asking such a ridiculous question.

Regards,

It is not a ridiculous question.

The appropriate amount really depends on body chemistry, strength of the scent, climate, etc. Some people want everyone to smell their cologne, some do not want anyone to know except those who are right next to them. I tend to the latter category and know Ive used too much if someone else (besides my wife) comments on it.

Floris #89 is a fairly potent scent, I would start with a spritz on the chest and one on the wrist if I wanted others to know about it. In an office environment I would leave it at one on the chest and call it a day.

Regards,

Not a bad question by any stretch. EDTs are a lot different than aftershave.

My advice would be to experiment with it before you wear it on a workday. Try the one on the chest and one on the wrist approach on a Saturday morning. It'll probably fade in and out during the day as you get used to it. You can check it every now and then to see what you think of its development. That way, if you don't like it there won't be any remorse on the way to work.

I was looking for Charley Bronson but I found this...

I usually put 5 spary myself. If I use something different, I'll try less and see how I go by the end of the day...

I don't have any advice to add to the above, but nice choice on the cologne!

+1 on 1 and 3 above.

I do not find that Floris is all that strong or lasts that long on me. So you should not assume that it stronger than it seems.

Of course, I'm just kidding - and my point is that it is indeed a personal thing that depends on a lot of different factors.

Personal preference/fragrance-tolerance threshold

Skin chemistry/PH - Oily skin will hold fragrances for longer, while dry skin will drink it up

The individual fragrance and it's lasting power and "sillage"

Humidity

The activity you're doing while wearing it
---

But like I said (jokingly), just start with one spray, and if it's not enough, try two and then three. I usually use between 1 and 4 sprays, depending on the fragrance. With something medium-bodied from Floris, I'd expect to use 2 or 3 sprays.

I think I have the answers I was looking for..I truly was not aware of the oily skin..dry skin scenarios..makes sense. Thanks to all who responded.

I was just thinking about this. I have L'Artisan's Navegar that I bought a few months ago in Israel. I have dry skin, but Tel Aviv is VERY humid and even though it's a light scent, it would project somewhat. Now I live in LA which is really dry and I find myself putting like 6 sprays on my neck yet the scent still disappears after 5 minutes unless you put your nose right on the skin. Feels like such a waste of expensive EDT. So does humid weather make an EDT stronger and dry weather make it less strong?

As it's been stated in regards to body chemistry...humidity..how arid the air is..all plays a part in the strength of a cologne..if I am interpeting this correctly... Where you live...what you do...what you buy ...all depends on how your going to smell! Jesus..if I knew it was going to be like this I would just stick to Aqua Velva and call it a day!! What a guessing game with colognes at best.

Regards,

That's what makes it fun. With shaving, once you have one shaving brush, one razor and one cream you are done - at least that's what I thought. With colognes, it's endless.

And I thought it was going to end with the razors, creams & brushes. When I take my first whiff of a fine high end EDT I believe I am going to be in BIG trouble!

You're right. A few months ago I would never have imagined that I'd be spending this much time thinking about this, but it's surprisingly enjoyable. (The long-suffering Mrs. Obsessed might disagree, however!)
