How long is your alum lasting?

I use my alum block everyday and after three months theres only about a third of it left, am i using it too much? i rub it over my face about three times when finished shaving.

I've had my alum for 5 months and use it about 4 days a week.
I was thinking that apart from little chips off the corners from dropping it, the block is almost the same size as when I bought it!
I wonder what we are doing so differently?

I have used the same block for well over a year. I have dropped it several times and broke it in half. I use my alum block four times a week, and had I not broke it, I would say that it would easily last 2 years.

With moderate use (5 times a week ?) mine lasted almost a year. Would have lasted longer except just before it ran out I dropped it on a tile floor. A *shattering* experience.

Are you storing it wet?

I've read that wetness will shorten its' life more than using it will.

Do you dry your alum block after use? I've found that moisture tends to be the biggest culprit to an alum block dissolving away. Usually just a pat try with tissue or toilet paper works well. My alum block of about a year and a half is nice and rounded -- like a stone in a stream of water. My previous one dissolved more quickly and roughly, as it seemed to recrystallize along the edges, etc.

Interesting question. Obviously, I use my own 60gr RazoRock alum stick. They seem to last me about 6 months; I use it after every shave (I shave every other day). After use, I dry it with a towel before screwing the top back on; if you put it away wet, it definitely won't last as long.

Yes i always dry it with my towel when finished, i think i am just rubbing it over my face too much, but i really like the tingly sting of it on my freshly shaved face.

I've had mine for about three years and hardly looks used. I think you will drop it and break it before it wears out.

You aren't alone:001_smile

Nothing lasts forever. Good excuse to buy more stuff. Can't just order 1 thing.

Yes i ordered another and of course i had to order some proraso cream and a puck of mwf, just to justify the shipping cost you understand.

Mine has lasted well over a year and still looks good. Drying will extend its lifespan as well as prevent it from getting coarse when used.

I've had mine for about 2 months now. Still the same size more or less.

I do dry it before putting it away. Just pat it dry on the towel. I do this not for it's longevity so much as keeping the cardboard box intact. If it was put away we the box would disintegrate in no time at all and then my step-lad would probably eat the alum block out of curiosity :001_tongu

Using mine for about 2 years (not every day mind you) and I can't even tell it's been used other than the edges look a bit rounded.

Ive been using my block (which was only 50g to begin with) for about 12 months. I do 2 passes with it, the first gives that slight sting when closing the pores then the second pass is nice a cold on my face...sometimes I go for a third if I want that extra cooling effect. It is about 70% finished.

I have a new block waiting to replace it and that one is 100g so I would expect it to last atleast 2 years.

Had mine for approx 10 weeks now and have about 2/3 remaining with a daily shave. Has a few edges missing from hitting the floor but should see the summer(hopefully!) out.

David, you must have the same kind of alum as i have, everyone else is getting years out of theirs and mine is only going to last a few months.
