How does one use this?

I picked this up for cheap at a thrift store around the corner from me. It seems to be a shaving item, but what is that protrusion in the front for?

It could double as razor storage when not shaving, though it wouldn't save that much room. Head in, handle pointing up and out, maybe.

The brush can rest directly on the puck like any mug. That second cup is to hold the hot water for the brush back in the days before running water. Dip & swirl.

Does the receptacle in the front connect to the underside of the adjacent, larger bowl? If so, it could be a scuttle for keeping your lather and brush warm between passes.

Nope. Just a thingy sticking out. I ordered me a scuttle from DirtyBird so this is going bye, bye soon. I seem to be collecting too many mugs for my small bathroom.

I'm finding that it's basicly useless.

That is what I would expect.

The older style scuttles (which were used in a time period when hot water was not readily available at the tap) are basically worthless in today's world. They were designed for bringing hot water to the shaving area, not for keeping lather warm.

When these scuttles were used "back in the day" how was the razor cleaned during shaving? Was it dipped in the warm water, wiped on a towel, or dipped in a separate container of cold water? In this modern era, I rinse my 50+ year old razors under a steady stream of running hot water (what luxury!).:biggrin1:

Wiped on a towel. I remember no hot running water, nor running cold water except from the hand pump. Also remember no electricity and no indoor plumbing. Those were NOT "the good old days!"
