What's new

How do you decide WHAT to sell?

I'll start with a simple understatement - I have way too much "stuff"

I have been thinking that I need to sell some razors as I am going months between using a razor.

Today I shaved with a razor that I have not used since June 16th. That is half a YEAR ago. It's a nice razor and I have no idea why it has been sitting for so long and why I haven't picked it up in that long. I take a SOTD (shave of the day) pic every day and date it so I can go back and see how long it has been since I have used something.

SO.....

I take this razor out. Pull out the camera and take some BST pics of it with my avatar as the background to meet the BST rules of identifying the image as mine and not a "stock" photo.

THEN...

I shave with it.

AND

g&^%#! d*+%^ m^%!@~

I get a perfect shave and say to myself WT# I can't sell this?

I have done the same thing for the past couple of weeks now. Pick out something that I haven't used in ages, THEN use it and find out it is FANTASTIC...

SO how do YOU decide how to part with something that works flawlessly for you? I just can't seem to part with anything.....

BTW here is today's shave. NO way can I sell this Tradere OC razor. I got an AMAZING close, smooth, comfortable, shave!!!!

You, my friend, have a SERIOUS problem... I used to be like that, actually, I think I still am.

I don't get rid of stuff I like, but whatever doesn't work for me in scent or performance has got to go. I got rid of some soaps and creams. And I still have about fifty soaps in rotation and can't seem to figure out which ones have to go, I don't want to get rid of any.

Basically, I think we're hoarders. There's no hope for people like us.

Sounds like you have a technique problem.

Problem being you are to darn good and get great shaves out of every razor!

Lol you're probably out of luck and if you "NEED" to sell anything then take your very favorite and put them aside and with the rest decide on looks alone?

I was thinking I could build myself a roulette wheel but instead of numbers I would list the razors I own and just let chance be the decider

THEN...

I thought I would have to put my BRW customs in there to take their chances so I threw that idea out the window :thumbdown

I am really lost. I know that I do not need all of these razors but I cannot figure out HOW I can decide what to sell.

I knew I was in trouble when I bought another dozen velvet storage bags and still had more razors than bags and started to order another dozen.

HELP!!!!!!

I am starting to think I need "professional" help :letterk1:

Here's what you do. Take all of your customs and put them away. ( no need to get rid of those beauties ) Then, pick out the 10 most favorite razors left.( save those ) Now put numbers in a hat ( however many razors are left ) and draw a number for each razor and place it on the razor. Put the numbers back in the hat and start selling them off as you pick a number out of the hat.

or
Keep it all and forget this nonsense :)

I think the easiest way is to look at your stuff. If something has been sitting for any length of time without being used, or even considered, then its probably time to get it on its way. :crying:

Well, if you don't want to keep the brush in that picture....

I suppose if you like your gear that much it would be pretty difficult to weed. Personally if I've owned an item or product for a while and feel like it's just not as good as other things I own, then I get rid of it. Maybe I'm a minimalist at heart though, since I currently only own one razor and brush, and only about half a dozen soaps.

It really sounds like if you want to reduce your den you're going to have to give up some of the many items that give you perfect shaves. Do you really want to do that?

Turtle - I think part of the issue is the shaving gear we buy from all around the globe is maybe so GOOD with the B&B folks "willingly" testing every thing out for us and lastly, our techniques have gotten so GOOD it is truly HARD!

I do not envy you at all and of course many suggestions will be made but maybe the best is to say, "I want to simplify" and here are the strict rules to in order to stay? Like putting a "bell curve" into place?

Or else live with the knowledge that you have some of the BEST stuff to get a GREAT shave always, not a bad thing :thumbup1:

BTW, nice photo of some nice stuff.......Gene

first of all you wait until February until I am able to buy something....dern January Pare Down...

Then after I get the PIF together per the Pare Down rules, I'll contact you with what I need to replace the stuff I'm giving away and then you sell to me

Seriously though.....nah who wants to be serious. How bout you just do a couple PIFs then you wont have to worry bout trying to decide what to sell and you will still be thinning the herd.

My problem is that I don't want to start shaving twice a day and in order to use all of my razors it looks like I may have to do just that.

I've pulled out several razors and given them a very serious looking over and after shaving with them I find that they are providing just too nice of a shave to get rid of.

I did sell off all but 2 of my straight razors. I did not find that I got a closer smoother shave with a straight so I stopped using them and selling was easy as they were NOT being used.

It is just the opposite with the DE, SE, and injector razors. I DO use these and I get great shaves from all that I have. Great shaves as in no stubble for 12 hours after shaving.

I have sold DE and SE razors that I felt I did not enjoy using. Now I am down to ones that I DO enjoy using. That is the hard part. I find it difficult to think about selling my Joris, or my Feather, or my Pils, or my Leresche, or any of my BRW customs, as I get great shaves from them. Same with the older Gillette razors I have kept. The ones that I did not get great shaves with were easy to sell. Now I am down to only the ones that easily could be my one and only razor.

I do have several duplicates that will go away but the ones that are singles I am stumped about what to do.

I do not NEED to thin anything out. I just do not have enough whiskers to uses all of them is all.

Hey maybe I should just sell everything and grow another beard

Basically, I think we're hoarders. There's no hope for people like us.

At least it's small, cheap stuff. Gun collectors, car collectors, blow torch collectors (for some reason, I now have two), etc, that is quite different then a bit of razors, soaps and Avon decanters. :biggrin1:

For production - mass produced ones - that I like to shave with, I like to keep a dup. These things get dropped and get bent or broke. If I have a collector grade one - really shiny - I like to have a decent one for using (also shiny BTW).

Good luck!

Change the game. I haven't had as many razor as you perhaps but I'm on a lease mentality as opposed to own. Especially the singles. I hold greater value to those that came with a home:). Also those items I know you have are custom keep. User grade will find a new home.
Good luck in your selections.

I guess I'm not to the selling stage yet. I only buy what I want to keep usually. If I have something that I find I don't need or want to hold I use it to give away or trade. Just part of the fun.
