Are they still made/available? How are they compared to badger and boar?
Nice! Wish I had something like that when I bought mine - every dollar saved, is another earned for another boar. That'll be a good deal for a wonderfully-sized, quality horse brush.
I recomend too to choose the hair extra model because Vie-Long blunts the hair to get a softer finished. The differents colors (black & brown) doesn't matter, are the real horse's colors.
Kamamuri, is that brush a 20mm knot? It looks bigger than that, but the link you sent only has 20mm knots that seem like they might be on the smaller end of things.
Yes it is. (http://www.giftsandcare.com/en/catalog/the-pleasure-of-shaving/barber-brushes/professional-brush-no2-brown-horse-hair-extra.html).
The smaller (18 mm knot size): http://www.giftsandcare.com/en/catalog/the-pleasure-of-shaving/barber-brushes/professional-brush-no1-brown-horse-hair-extra.html
The brush specs (mine):
Overall height: 11,8 cm - 4,64 inches
Handle height: 5,8 cm - 2,28 inches
Bristle height: 6 cm - 2,36 inches
Knot size: 20 mm
Handle diameter: 3 cm - 1,18 inches
I hope it helps you.
I have used a horse hair brush all my life except the last year, when I found this forum, the badger, the boar and the crazy traditional shaving world (I love this game). I buyed this brushes to my hairdresser or barber.
In order to try a spanish horse hair brush I recommend a professional model that you can find in the Gifts&Care web site. Cheap, robust, versatile, like a draught horse. The link: http://www.giftsandcare.com/en/catalog/the-pleasure-of-shaving/barber-brushes.html
Are called Brocha Barbera (Professional brush). This kind of brushes has been used for the barbers in Spain all the life. I recomend too to choose the hair extra model because Vie-Long blunts the hair to get a softer finished. The differents colors (black & brown) doesn't matter, are the real horse's colors.
I have purchased one recenetly and I'm very happy with this stuff. Lathering very good, is very soft in the face but a little stiffy. Better with creams but works very well with soaps. Some pics of my old and new horse hair brush:
The last one before I known the traditional shave (10 years old):
My recent purchase:
The last week I have had two good shaves with this brush.
YES! I want to add that several guys that posted threads about their non vie-long brushes complained about foul odor and lots of dye coming off the first couple of pre shave shampoos...you will not get this problem with the vie-longs...those are real horse hairs, sanitized by steam pressure and leaving the natural color of the horse INTACT...if you want a real horse, get a vie-long !!
