Honing With a Barber Hone (Redux)

I just got Tonsorial Gem dual grit barber hone (my first ever hone). The only video that popped up on Youtube is this one:

Any other tips or tricks to using a barber hone?

That guy does a pretty good job of covering it.

The lather on the hone really improved the overall "harshness" of the barber hones I have used.

I think Xman covers it all, at least for a single grit hone. Your dual grit will give you a bit more versatility, though you may have to expeirement or do some research to figure out what the grit on the coarser side is and what you can do with it.

Yes, I've used a good two sided barber hone and it can be surprisingly versatile. I have not tried the exact hone you have, but I think you have probably made a good choice for a first hone. I'm sure we can all think of different tasks that can be done very professionally and quickly with the "right" tool. While the same job can be done, with more effort and tedium, with a cheaper tool. I think honing can also play out this way. If one is able and willing to do the work, the coarse side of the two sided barber hone can substitute for a coarser sharpening stone, enabling you to tackle more honing chores than a single sided barber hone.

If, instead of the lather, you use water with a drop of liquid soap in it, you can also watch how the water flows over the blade and this helps make sure that all the blade is in contact with the hone. The soap breaks the surface tension of the water and seems to suck the blade down onto the hone. BTW, a drop of soap in the water will improve the performance of any hone.

I'll have to try that.

if your stone has 2 side then 1 of them is course other is fine.
usually barber hones fast cutting stones. set bevel and sharpen in courser side and finish it up in branded side .you should be ok.if you do everything right your edge will be sharp enough to shave but a little harsh . chro2 will help to take harshness away.

Whether or not the edge feels harsh will depend on the razor. For example, I have a Dovo #41 stainless that loves the Swaty, taking an edge that's smooth as silk. This might be because stainless is a little softer than carbon steel.

Unfortunately we are in 2 different pages.
I said above harsh edge because of the original thread. This person and i was talking about
Tonsorial Gem dual grit barber hone stone.
I have swaty and Tonsorial Gem. I wasn't talking about swaty or any other barber hones except GEM. The Differences between those 2 stone is approximately ( i hope i am right on this) same as finishing same razor in shapton 16k and good belgian coticule. That is how you will feel . i brought that 2 stones up hoping most people have them or used.
Now about the cutting power of those stones . they will be similar this.
4k level GEM and 8k level swaty.
hope this helps and clears our doubts.
