Honing in Toronto?

I just bought my first straight but I'm not sure that I want to be bothered with honing it. Can anyone recommend a good place to have razors honed in Toronto? I know The Classic Edge (just outside the city) has a good reputation, but they charge $35 to hone a razor, which is more than I paid for my GD 208!

Getting a GD to shave ready, especially if it needs "tweaks" can be an involved process.

Most honers are going to charge you $20-30 depending on where they are and the volume they do, plus shipping to the US. Phil at CE charges a bit more because he is in high demand and always busy, afaik.

There are a several straight shavers around Toronto on here and SRP and we meet up periodically, at which point you might be able to get it honed or learn to hone it on your own with some expert help. Again, that depends on whether your particular GD has the shoulder issue or not. Check the meet-up section over there for when the threads pop up.

I'm based out in Ajax and, while I'm not a great honer, you are more than welcome to drop by my place and we'll see what we can do for you. Does the blade need a touch up or the full kit and kaboodle restoration type of honing?

If you guys don't want to give it a go (and I think you should) Contact Seth at menessentials, they apparently have someone local that does all their razors prior to selling them.

I'd offer to hone it for him, Brooksie, but I'd probably be doing him a disservice. My skills are not where they need to be to get a razor shave-ready at this point in time--I haven't had nearly enough practice. I do have plans to fix that, but probably not until next year.

If you want to send it to London (and pay return shipping) ill hone it for you. Never seen a gold dollar and this will save me having to buy one :) although I'd definitely look closer to home for a while first.
